"TERRIBLE, TERRIIBLE, TERRIBLE!!!! My home warranty company sent Salego to my home due to furnace cycling on/off.(Furnace was still heating house, just took a little longer than normal.) technician arrived and instead of looking for a problem, immediately started changing settings which the furnace had been set to for many years. He Increased high limit shut off temperature, and increased blower to max speed. (Furnace had operated perfectly fine on previous settings for many years.) After making those adjustments, the furnace would not even ignite. (My furnace always ignited prior to technician making those adjustments.) technician never performed any diagnostics or checked functioning of a single sensor. Instead, he looked inside the heat exchanger and said “this furnace is shot, the heat exchanger is cracked.” Technician then began discussing prices of new furnace. Once again, my furnace was heating my home prior to this service call, now technician was leaving and my furnace wouldn’t even ignite. I asked him to make it work again due to me having a 1 year old child in the home and needing heat. Technician refused to make furnace operable because of the risk of carbon monoxide. I explained I have CO detectors which have never detected any CO in the house but he still refused to make my furnace operable. Conclusion: I paid $75 for technician to make my problem worse and completely disable my heat. What a deal, huh? A 2nd opinion revealed heat exchanger is not cracked and my furnace is not “shot.”"

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Blocking or closing return air vents on the floor or ceiling will not save money on energy bills and could place additional stress on the HVAC system. Installers strategically place return vents to ensure the best flow of air throughout the entire system, so keeping them open and free from blockages is important. Figure out how to open ceiling air vents and return vents. Check them occasionally to ensure air can freely flow into them for maximum performance.

If a professional does ductwork cleaning correctly, your home should not be dusty. However, inexperienced cleaners, including DIYers, may dislodge debris without properly containing it. Ensure any pro you hire is certified and has the correct equipment to capture debris instead of just stirring it up.

Musty smells often indicate the presence of mold, which can lead to various health risks. Inhalation of mold spores may trigger allergic reactions, causing sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, and itchy or watery eyes. People who suffer from mold allergies or asthma may experience more severe respiratory problems. Certain types of mold, like black mold, can lead to mycotoxicosis, a condition associated with serious health effects like respiratory problems, fatigue, headaches, and skin irritation if exposure continues for an extended period. Those with weakened immune systems, respiratory problems, or allergies may be more vulnerable to the health risks that come with musty smells. Therefore, it is crucial to address and eliminate the source of the odor promptly.

You can find the smell of mold in your house in two ways: following your nose, and using common sense tactics like looking anywhere there’s water first. Mold cannot form in a completely dry environment, which is why you see mold much more often under kitchen sinks than on garage floors. If you have looked everywhere and still can’t find the source, hire a pro, because you may have mold in your walls.

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.
