"Beware of signing any agreements with Pro Fence and Railing! I put down a deposit for the full price of a fence installation after being told that the fence would be installed within 2 months. Several weeks later, I was told that the installation date would actually be over 4 months from the date of the initial deposit. As it would happen, we suddenly needed to sell our house prior to the installation date, so I asked Pro Fence if we could cancel the project and have the deposit refunded. Even though the installation date wasn't for another 2 months, they refused, citing that "all deposits are non-refundable". While that may be true, businesses that generally try to do the right thing will usually make exceptions in scenarios like this that are out of the control of the customer. It's an incredibly greedy company that simply doesn't care about doing the right thing for the customer. Their needs will always come before yours."

Founded by P.S. Edwards and operating since 1926, our main office and lumber yard are located in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. P.S. Edwards’ sons, Pete and Frank, returned home after serving in World War II and joined the company in the 1940’s. The third generation joined Brookside Lumber in the 1970’s and continues to be involved with the operation of the company. The Brookside name was chosen because of a new residential area close by that was named “Brookside Farms”. With a railroad siding on the property, lumber was delivered by rail car and sold to builders in the local area. A small showroom of 200 square feet was set up in a sales office that was built in the 1930’s. The front of the present showroom was constructed in 1967 with a drive-through loading area in the back. Today Brookside Lumber covers over seven acres with over 100,000 square feet of product under roof. In 1998 the company merged with H.P. Starr Lumber Company, another family owned independent lumberyard located in the Butler county. Since 1998, the two companies have continued to grow with the surrounding communities.

Specializing in fence installation and repair for wood, chain link, vinyl, aluminum, privacy, etc. fences. This is a business that I own and operate but it is not my primary source of income so I am able to keep my prices extremely competitive and am often much lower than the competition!

"They were very friendly and extremely hard working. They arrived between 8/830am and worked until about 9pm to finish the fence. It looks great and they even took my dogs into consideration when working stepping it down due to the slope in my yard. They cleaned everything up afterwards and walked me around to look at the entire fence and tested both gates before they left."

Yes, you should confirm that the fencing installer you hire is insured before proceeding with the job. In most cases they do not need a specific fencing license, but rather a general contractor’s license. Hiring a licensed contractor protects you as a homeowner from fraud, poor work, and potential legal woes.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

The average cost to install a fence is between $1,760 and $4,500. These costs are what an average homeowner spends, but you might spend more or less depending on several factors. For a smaller DIY project, you might get away with spending as little as $430, or for a much larger project (like fencing for a 5-acre yard), you can spend in excess of $43,000.

Besides the size of your yard, other factors like your fence material, fence height, site prep, and additional fence features like gates all impact the overall cost. Additionally, the high cost of raw materials and manufacturing can all make the overall price tag higher.

Before you hire a fence installer to build you the fence of your dreams for your yard, it’s important to set expectations up front by asking questions. Some questions to consider include:

  • Do you offer a warranty?

  • Do you offer financing or a payment plan?

  • Do you have references?

  • Do you have photos of previous work?

  • What type of fencing materials do you work with?

Do you have references?

Are all fasteners exterior (galvanized)?

How deep are you concreting the post?

What is the lowest maintenance fencing?

How will you deal with slopes?

Only some fences require a permit to build. Factors like where you live, how tall your fence will be, and where in your yard you plan to build all impact the need to have a permit. Below are a few examples of when a permit is needed; it’s always best to check with your fence installer to confirm if a permit is required.

Generally, if you live somewhere rural, like on a farm, there’s a good chance you will not need a fence permit. However, you will most likely need a permit if you live in a highly populated area. In addition, many privacy fences in your backyard won’t need a permit if it is 6 feet or shorter. However, you might need a permit for anything over 3.5 feet in your front yard.

Any solid panels over 8 feet in height will require a permit, while a 2-foot lattice top on a 6-foot fence does not require a permit.

Fence installers typically charge by the hour when working on a project. Typically, you can expect to pay around $50 per hour for fence installation. Your project might take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the length of your fence, overall project complexity, and fence type.
