"Work was done very professionally with great attention to detail and absolutely no shortcuts were taken. The carpenter assigned to the job, Steve, built the deck as if it were being done at his own home. We have received many compliments on the looks and integrity of the new Trex deck. Township inspections were passed with no discrepancies found. Building codes were followed to the T. We are exceptionally happy with this project."

"It went without surprises, we were happy with the quality of the work, and we have scheduled Frank to come back and give an estimate for some additional ceiling work in our garage, as he noticed splits in other ceiling seams were showing, and they probably should have screws (rather than only nails) attaching them to the wood above them."

"We had a major water leak from our air conditioning system which damaged our laminate flooring as well as our drywall ceiling and a few walls. We contacted IPS, who provided fast service. They promptly came out to repair the flooring as well as the drywall.  They were very skilled in their work, it was a high quality job done in an extremely professional manner. They were very courteous and personable as well. In addition to that work, they also painted our laundry room which needed painting and installed handles on our cabinets. I was extremely pleased with all of the work and would highly recommend them to anyone without hesitation.

"I had been looking to have my roof done for months. Seth Kemmerer responded to my requests and I loved he provided options. Other companies did not provide options just pushed a higher priced job. Seth was very hands on and in communicated every step of what was happening with the job. I hired their company 9/18/2020 and my roof was installed; job completed 9/21/2020. I will be using them for future work. A great experience !!!! This company rocks!!!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.
