Numerous primers on the market will do the job of covering peeling paint. The best primers for peeling paint are bonding or adhesive primers that essentially glue the edges of peeling paint back to the subsurface while providing a smooth, even surface for the new paint coat.

Always fill gaps before painting for the most professional results. Gap-filling materials such as caulk and wood filler require primer and paint to match surrounding surfaces, so addressing gaps during your painting project ensures consistent color and finish throughout the room.

You can paint over cracked paint, but only if you properly sand down the damaged areas. Once the surface is as smooth as you can get it, clean the walls and let them dry before applying a new coat of paint. Painting over cracked paint without sanding or cleaning beforehand will not cover up the cracks and may even make them look worse.

Unlike staining concrete, painting concrete often results in chips and peeling over time. You can expect numerous touchups over the years if the concrete is in a high-traffic area. Since concrete paints are opaque, you may also find it more difficult to get the exact color results you want. Lastly, painting concrete can make it much more slippery unless you mix in an additive for traction.

The average cost to paint a ceiling is about $250, but costs can range from $150 to $550, depending on the square footage and height of the ceiling, the type of ceiling, the type of paint, the type of primer, labor costs, the trim and molding present, and the prep required.
