Some signs that a septic tank is full include wastewater or even sewage backing up into drains in the house, foul smells coming up through the drains or around the yard, pooling water in the yard, spongy soil underfoot around the septic tank, gurgling noises in the pipes, or grass that looks lusher or greener than normal without any new lawn care services.

A septic system can fail for various reasons, and most commonly, excessive water use or sudden surges in wastewater can overwhelm the system's capacity. Neglecting regular maintenance, like tank pumping and inspections, can also lead to clogs, leaks, and eventual breakdowns. You can put yogurt in your septic tank, but it will not increase the bacteria in your septic tank. In other words, it won't harm your tank, but it won't get rid of a septic smell or boost the performance of your septic system. While yogurt contains helpful bacteria, you would need to buy an extraordinary amount of yogurt to make any difference. Adding yogurt is not a helpful or cost-effective strategy.

Your toilet will still flush if the septic tank is full, but it might flush more slowly. It may make gurgling sounds as the wastewater slowly drains through the pipes. You may also notice the toilet clogs up more frequently when the septic tank is full, although this can also be a sign of other plumbing issues, like a clog in the pipes.

Most septic tanks can handle two to three loads of laundry per day, or a weekly total of between seven and 10 loads. Although septic systems do require homeowners to be somewhat careful with their plumbing systems—for instance, it’s not a good idea to flush a bunch of toilet paper all at once—they can still handle fairly heavy use.
