In 1941, C.H. & E.A. Snyder Excavating began as a small construction company between Charles H. Snyder, Sr. and his younger brother Elmer A. Snyder. Over the next several years, the Snyder brothers continued to pursue civil construction projects in west central Pennsylvania, utilizing their first piece of equipment, a P&H 150 shovel. During World War II the funding for infrastructure construction projects was greatly diminished. With the possibility of having an idle fleet of equipment, Chuck Sr. and Elmer recognized that the WWII effort was gaining momentum, and their endeavors turned toward surface coal mining. In 1948, the Snyder brothers expanded their operations by acquiring the Glacial Sand & Gravel Company in Kittanning, PA. The year 1953 marked the formation of Allegheny Mineral Corp. and the opening of the company's first limestone quarry. Over the next several decades, the company added limestone quarries in Harrisville and Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. In 1975, the Snyder family reorganized and created a parent company, Snyder Associated Companies, Inc. The holding company currently has multigenerational management ranging from the second generation through the fourth generation. Charles Snyder, Jr., of the second generation, currently serves as the holding company's chairman of the board. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Snyder Associated Companies, Inc., Allegheny Mineral Corp. benefits from over 70 years of experience in the mining industry. While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Stone houses used to be much more practical, but with the advent of stronger and cheaper materials like concrete, they aren’t seen as much anymore. There are some parts of the world where it makes sense to build with stone, and they are usually next to a stone quarry. Stone is, however, very weather-resistant, which is why many homes near the sea and on mountains are still built with local stone.

Two types of masonry are veneer masonry and solid masonry. Veneer masonry is thin brick or stone material attached to the face of a building. With veneer masonry, the walls support the weight of the masonry products rather than the masonry being built on a concrete footing. Solid masonry is a wall or other brick or stone structure built on a concrete footing, and the masonry supports itself.

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.
