After four years, we introduced Appleridge Stone to our distribution service area. At that time a manufacturing facility was established in Blairsville, PA. In 1941, C.H. & E.A. Snyder Excavating began as a small construction company between Charles H. Snyder, Sr. and his younger brother Elmer A. Snyder. Over the next several years, the Snyder brothers continued to pursue civil construction projects in west central Pennsylvania, utilizing their first piece of equipment, a P&H 150 shovel. During World War II the funding for infrastructure construction projects was greatly diminished. With the possibility of having an idle fleet of equipment, Chuck Sr. and Elmer recognized that the WWII effort was gaining momentum, and their endeavors turned toward surface coal mining. In 1948, the Snyder brothers expanded their operations by acquiring the Glacial Sand & Gravel Company in Kittanning, PA. The year 1953 marked the formation of Allegheny Mineral Corp. and the opening of the company's first limestone quarry. Over the next several decades, the company added limestone quarries in Harrisville and Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. In 1975, the Snyder family reorganized and created a parent company, Snyder Associated Companies, Inc. The holding company currently has multigenerational management ranging from the second generation through the fourth generation. Charles Snyder, Jr., of the second generation, currently serves as the holding company's chairman of the board. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Snyder Associated Companies, Inc., Allegheny Mineral Corp. benefits from over 70 years of experience in the mining industry. Headquartered in Kittanning, PA, and Allegheny Mineral Corp. continues to provide crushed and pulverized stone and other essential infrastructure materials throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Currently, Allegheny Mineral operates limestone crushing operations in Murrinsville, Harrisville, Slippery Rock and Worthington, Pennsylvania.

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts

Drilling into brick doesn’t have to be a dangerous project if you prep and approach it with the right tools and techniques, but it does come with risks if it’s not done correctly. It can lead to significant issues, such as damaging the brick or affecting the wall’s structural integrity. Applying too much force can crack or chip the brick, while incorrect placement might compromise its load-bearing strength.

Yes, you can cut patio stones with a circular saw. Similar to using an electric grinder, you will need to use a diamond blade as this is the most effective blade for cutting a material like stone. The stone must be wet when using a circular saw to ensure the cut is smooth.

Yes, brick can breathe through limewash. Limewash is a breathable coating made from natural lime and water, allowing moisture to pass through while providing a protective layer. Unlike synthetic paints or sealants, which can trap moisture within the brick and lead to issues like mold, limewash allows the brick to maintain its natural breathability. This characteristic makes limewash an ideal choice for historic structures where preserving the integrity of the brick is essential.

Yes, limewash on brick can accumulate dust over time. Its porous nature can attract dust particles, especially in environments with high levels of dust or dirt. Additionally, if the limewash surface is left unsealed, it may be more prone to collecting dust. Additionally, incorrectly applied limewash will generate dust. Causes include applying it too thickly instead of thin layers and not allowing enough drying time between layers. Regular maintenance, such as gentle cleaning or dusting, can help mitigate dusty issues.

Yes, masonry is more expensive than concrete because the labor is much more involved. With masonry, your expert will build your project from the ground up, one piece at a time, ensuring they use the proper amount of mortar or grout during construction and keeping the project level or plumb. Pouring concrete can also be labor-intensive, but it’s a bit less involved. It requires building a mold, pouring the concrete, and letting it cure. The less intensive labor makes concrete a more affordable option in most cases.
