"Yellowlite did a great job. They were competitive against other solar installers, and then offered an end of the year discount that made them the winning bid. Gross cost was $2.53/W, and I will get 26% back as a tax credit. It took ~8 weeks from signing contract to install, and installation took 3 days for the electrician, 1 day for rooftop crew. They were very flexible and great to work with. For example, instead of routing conduit on the roof to connect two separate panel sections, I asked them to go through the attic, and they made the change without a second thought. The quality was great, and the electrician took his time to make the installation look good. The city inspector didn't spend much time looking at the system once he knew it was YellowLite--he was already familiar with their quality. Although the final 20% was earned for them upon startup, I did have to chase down permitting status with the utility, but only lost 1.5 weeks of solar (in cloudy February)."

"I was completely impressed with Raycycle for the purchase and installation of my solar panels. The CEO, Adam Smith, was extremely helpful with the explanation of how solar works, what the benefits would be, the time frame in which the panels would be installed and the finance options available to me. From start to finish the communication between Adam and my project engineer Eric Tennant was superb. They handled all of the borough and electric company permits and delivery of all equipment needed to install the panels. They used Green Rack Contracting for the installation process and set up of the Enphase system, which monitors my solar panels on a consistent basis so I can follow the progress of my own energy production in real time. I interviewed over 10 solar panel companies and am extremely happy with my choice of Raycycle. They were the most reasonably priced for my situation and the products offered, which are top notch! I also liked the fact that they are a local company! I would highly recommend Raycycle to anyone looking to have solar panels installed on their home or business. I have been extremely happy with the system and the money savings I have already received in my first month! Thank you Raycycle!"

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

Not all homes are suited for solar panel systems. Older roofs or those in poor condition may need repairs or replacement before solar panels can be installed. Some other factors to consider are the amount of sunlight your roof receives, the roof’s orientation and pitch, and any shading from nearby trees or buildings.

Learn about common solar blockers in your area to determine how often you should wash solar panels and the best cleaning method:

  • Soot: If you have a fireplace, soot can disperse and accumulate on the solar panels.

  • Debris, dirt, and leaves: These natural elements require light cleaning. Being close to trees or living in a desert area can cause more of these to accumulate.

  • Pollen: Areas with a high pollen count require more frequent solar panel cleaning, and sticky plant material requires a deeper cleaning.

  • Bird droppings: Bird droppings are binding and more difficult to remove. Keep this in mind if you live near a lot of surrounding trees.

Yes, going solar really saves money. In fact, according to some calculations, the average homeowner who switches from electric to solar power will save almost $2,000 a year on energy costs. While buying solar panels and switching to solar can be costly up front, the savings add up over time. If you can sell back extra energy or take advantage of tax incentives, your savings can be even higher.

The best way to know if your roof can support solar panels is to hire a structural engineer. They’ll look at your roof and approve the design of your solar panel system or suggest changes. The best roofing for solar panels is made from strong materials like asphalt shingles and metal, but tile and gravel will work. Softer materials like thatch or temporary structures are not a good fit.

The best solar panels to withstand hail are those rated UL 61730. These solar panels are certified to withstand hailstones up to 3 inches in diameter and travel at speeds up to 88 mph. IP68 solar panels are the next most resilient solar panel. Solar panels without these ratings can handle hail up to 1 inch in diameter that travels up to 50 miles per hour. If you live in an area with frequent or severe hailstorms, purchasing UL 61730 solar panels is often worth the investment.
