In many cases, you will need a building permit for your patio, but it depends on the type of patio. Generally speaking, any improvements to your land considered “permanent” will require a permit. Since a concrete patio is a permanent foundation, you will need a permit. Stone steps are often more expensive than concrete steps as they are specially cut and installed, on top of the material costs. Concrete is more readily available as many steps are precast, although custom-poured concrete steps are an option more similar in price to stone steps.

Concrete should not be poured directly over grass, as this will impede the necessary tension of the concrete. Grass and soil can draw in moisture, leading to potential cracking. For a solid, lasting foundation, the area must be flat, firm, and completely dry.

Balconies and patios are both outdoor living spaces, but that’s where the similarities end. A balcony is an open space built on the second story of a home, while a patio is a structure built directly on the ground in front of or behind a house. Patios tend to be larger than balconies and are often made from concrete, stone, or brick. Decks and patios share a similar nature but still have distinct differences.

The average ROI you’ll see from a deck or a concrete patio is 70%, so from a value-add perspective, they’re about the same. However, decks are around double the price of a concrete patio, they require significantly more maintenance, and they have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, about half of what you’d see from a concrete patio. As such, a concrete patio is a better option in terms of up-front cost, long-term maintenance, and ROI.
