Customers say: Quick response

"My rain gutter recently became blocked even though it is of the gutter helmet type. Due to the blockage water was not running down the downspout. I called J & D Gutters and they showed up and cleared out the obstruction (an extra rain gutter bracket that was not removed). There was also an opening in the corner which allowed leaves to enter the rain gutter which got caught in the downspout along with the extra mounting bracket. That opening was closed up as well as another opening at the other end. While he was up on the roof, he checked the other rain gutter for possible future problems. None were present. Thank goodness. I certainly appreciate him checking out the other rain gutter. I would definitely recommend J & D GUTTERS to anyone with rain gutter problems."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

Poor gutter drainage can cause sagging gutters, roof damage, mold, mildew, rot, basement flooding, and foundation cracks. With gutter replacement costs possible for just $500, getting the right system can save you thousands in repairs down the road.

There are a handful of things you can look for to determine if you need to pay for gutter repairs, including the following:

  • Water leaking from the underside of your gutters during rainfall

  • Visible gaps between your gutters and your roof

  • Frequent issues with gutters overflowing or holding standing water

  • Gutters that sag or pull away from the house

  • Water damage to soffits, fascia boards, or other building materials

  • Mold growth on your exterior walls

  • Soil erosion underneath your roof overhang

  • Foundation leaks or inward bowing of foundation walls

The average cost to install or replace gutters is around $2,000, with typical project costs ranging from $900 to $7,000. Most companies charge between $4 and $30 per linear foot. The total price depends on several factors, including the size of your home, the complexity of its footprint, the gutter material (e.g., vinyl, metal), and the gutter style (e.g., half-round, custom-built). Additional elements like downspouts, corners, and optional add-ons like gutter guards can also increase the price. The condition of your roof is another consideration, as new gutters cannot be installed on a rotting or sloping roof. While it can be an expensive upfront cost, new gutters are a worthwhile, long-lasting investment for protecting your home's exterior. You can save up to half on labor costs by installing them yourself.

The most common problem with gutters is clogging from debris like leaves, blossoms, and seeds from surrounding trees. This debris can block downspouts, leading to improper drainage and water overflow.

Other common issues include:

  • Leaks and holes, which can often be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk.

  • Rust, sagging, or detachment from the roofline.

  • Damage from strong storms.

  • Improperly pitched gutters that don't drain correctly.

Regular cleaning in the spring and fall is the best way to prevent most of these problems. You may need to clean them more often during periods of heavy leaf fall.

Calcium chloride does not do significant damage to gutters when used properly and in moderate amounts. If you use too much too frequently, it could eventually cause corrosion in your gutters. Rock salt will harm your gutters, though.
