"Left 3-4 phone messages (1 with an employee, 3 on answering machine) and 2 email messages before I got anyone to call me back. I got an appointment the next day and the rep came on time and assessed damages. I was told I would receive an email estimate the next day. I was obviously eager to have my window repaired/replaced as soon as possible. Did not hear from company as promised. Again left messages. Finally received an estimate via email 1 week later. By that time, I had lined up another glass company and agreed on their price. Window has since been replaced."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Glass block mortar is the best choice for glass block window units. It is specifically formulated for glass block window installation. Glass block mortar is usually a mixture of Portland cement, sand, and special chemicals. It is a white mortar that is applicable inside and outside your home. Do not use regular tile mortar because it may not have the binding strength and flexibility required for glass block windows.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.

Most installations take 1-3 days, depending on the number of blocks and customization requirements.

DIY is possible for small projects, but professional installation ensures proper sealing, structural integrity, and a precise finish.
