Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.

In most cases, you can’t connect to an existing sewer line, but this is specific to new builds and additions. For example, if you add on to a home or build an ADU, you'll likely have to install an entirely new sewer line. In most places, connecting new lines to an existing line is not up to code. As such, most new home builds or additions will require proposals for an entirely new line from the construction site to the sewer.

Sewage smells are among the most common signs of a broken sewer line. You might also have slow or backed-up drains, gurgling noises coming from your toilet, and sunken spots on your lawn. Similarly, if one area of your lawn starts to come alive and looks abnormally healthy, it might be due to a broken sewer line under your yard.

Some signs that your main sewer line is clogged are easy to spot, like when water backs up into your showers, sinks, and toilets for no apparent reason. However, some indicators are more subtle. The most common signs that you may have a clogged sewer main include:

  • Gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilet

  • Water in your basement drain or in the lawn
