"Fabiano and Will went over and beyond on this project. Hiring a carpenter you have never worked with before involves a certain degree of faith. That's what I did when hiring Fabiano Construction to build a triple-tiered flower bed on my rooftop with a trellis on my Philadelphia row-home rooftop. I was not disappointed. Fabiano and Will are a great team, they are very kind and they do great work. What more could you ask for? I am having both of them come back to rebuild my grill countertop and cabinetry! I have no regrets using Fabiano Construction and I will continue to use them in the future!"

"I could not be happier with my new enclosed porch! Mike came out in 11/21 and described options, took measurements and gave me an estimate and financing options to enclose an existing side porch for a 3-season room that had a concrete floor, roof and 4 posts. I was told that the project would take about 3 weeks and would begin in March. Everything was spot on! The completed project has aluminum framing, two steel doors, and vinyl floor. Everybody who's seen it says it's gorgeous! I am very satisfied."

"Tom was professional and flexible. I asked him to rebuild a kitchen table top and match it to the base I already had. He completed this job in record time under a week with beautiful craftsmanship. Highly recommend."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.
