PA055967-James A. Munion had a start just like anyone else, at the very bottom. He swept up the work shop for a company called Dotson brothers when he was only 12 years old. Mr. Dotson said to James A.: “I actually can’t believe that you moved the glue buckets out of the way to sweep in the corners. The last kid we had never took the time to do that.” From that day forward, James had a permanent place at Dotson Brothers. He quickly moved on to shop hand, and was allowed to help create the laminate counter tops the company made. After only a short amount of time, Mr. Dotson had trusted Jim with crafting them on his own. Jim took to it with excellent initiative. However, after an extended amount of time creating counter tops, it was time to move on with his career… James’ grandmother owned a two car garage she rented out for tenants. The day he said he was going to start his own business, she, (politely as an italian-broken-english-speaking grandmother could,) kicked out the two tenants immediately and gave him his work shop. Since that very day, we have been running the business out of that very same two car garage. We have been family owned and operated since we turned the power on in the shop, in 1978. Installations typically take 1-3 days, depending on area size; repairs are usually completed sooner if the issue is localized.

Installing kitchen countertop tiles on a mold and moisture-resistant cement backer board is one of the best options. When fitted correctly on top of a plywood base, it’s stable and long-lasting. Old-fashioned cement board is economical, cuts neatly and easily with a circular or jigsaw, and screws into plywood without any difficulty.

Your floors should be completely level for tile, otherwise you risk damaging the tiles in the future. When there are even small gaps or hills in the subfloor beneath the tile, this puts more pressure on the tile when you walk around on the floor. With repeated traffic, the tiles are at risk of cracking, and you’ll have to deal with tile repairs sooner than if the floor was completely level.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.
