"I would absolutely recommend KO HVAC. Both Cody and Steve were extremely professional. They returned phone calls promptly and arrived on time. They are both quite knowledgeable. They were respectful of my home and left it neat and orderly at the end of each day. Steve thoroughly explained the systems when they were done. I am extremely satisfied with the entire experience."

"The guy Luis from Safeway Heating LLC came and checked the system for since it was leaking. He checked the air flow, the filter, and checked the condenser temperature and pressure. He then stated I needed freon in my system that is why it's leaking. Once that was done he cleaned the water that was in the secondary pan of the ac unit and told me I should be good. That night my ac went out again. When I went to inspected it there was water leaking from my ac unit again into the secondary pan. I contacted Safeway Heating LLC again and when Luis came back out he claimed I needed a new coil and wrote me a contract for that. I then decided to have someone else come check my temperature and pressure again since now my ac was now blowing hot air. Once the other person hooked their system up they seen the pressure were extremely high and inquired if freon was added and what kind. I checked the invoice that Safeway Heating LLC provided and it said 410a. The guy informed me that, that was not the right freon and my system takes R22. When I contacted Safeway Heating LLC to double check what was put in my system, the lady Jess told me she had to wait to contact Louis since he was on another job to find out what he put in my system. Also she said that it should be 410a since that is what most systems take and that is what they mainly have in their office. I informed my system clearly states r22 so I dont know why Louis would put something else inside. She then said well maybe he did put r22 in and she doesn't know because she's not a techician. I informed her that the invoice states he put in 410a not r22. Jess then continue on and said it will take a while to reach Louis since he's doing another job. I then asked her what do they normally do in a situation like this and she stated she needs to speak with Louis first. This is insane because it's over 100° outside and she can't just call Louis up so we are able to resolve this issue quickly."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The DOE is phasing out AC units with SEER ratings that fall below 14 or 15. The exact minimum rating depends on your region. In the northern United States, new ACs must have a minimum SEER rating of 14, though you can still buy and install older systems as long as they were compliant when they were manufactured. In the southern and southwestern United States, you cannot buy or install older air conditioners with lower SEER ratings. The minimum rating is between 14.5 and 15, depending on the power of the unit.

The higher the BTU rating an air conditioner has, the more effective it can be at cooling your space. It will cool off your room faster in the short term. However, over the long term, if the unit has too many BTUs for the space, it can wear down the unit faster and shorten its life span.

To make the most out of your AC, consider implementing the following best practices:

  • Choose the right size AC for your home to ensure your unit runs as efficiently as possible.

  • Choose a window with shade, as direct sunlight can cause your AC unit to overheat.

  • Clean or replace the filter at least every two months.

  • Inspect the AC’s fan and straighten it if necessary.

  • Discontinue use immediately if you suspect a malfunction, as running the AC while broken can lead to significant issues.

  • Turn off (or adjust the temperature) when you leave the house.

While you’ll pay more upfront for a brand-new HVAC unit, you can save money in the long run. Here’s how to save on your new HVAC system:

  • When purchasing a high-efficiency system, your energy bills will be lower in the future.

  • You may be eligible for special offers from your local energy company.

  • Depending on the system, you may be eligible for HVAC rebates and tax credits.

  • Choose to replace your air conditioning unit and furnace simultaneously to save on labor and installation costs.

It’s not customary to tip HVAC technicians, and most professionals won’t expect it. However, it’s a nice way of showing your appreciation for the work they do, especially if they come out in inclement weather or on a weekend or holiday to fix an emergency issue if your heat or AC goes out in extreme temperatures. A good tip would be between 10% to 20% of the total bill, depending on how above and beyond the tech goes for your repair and on the total cost of your HVAC repair or service. For something like a routine tune-up or scheduled maintenance, tips aren’t expected.
