"I had a pretty poor experience with Ralph. I called him to come out and do an estimate after we had flooding in our lower family room and I had some drywall, trim, and carpeting ripped out. He promptly came out to do the estimate. He gave a great quote price and a 3-4 day timeline. I was excited to get it done and have my room back together before Thanksgiving. He first came out the second week in October. The drywall and spackling was no problem. He took a couple stabs at my steps and I could tell he didn’t want to refinish them. He actually told me it was more work than he wanted to do. Well he finished his job the week after Thanksgiving and my steps never got finished. Now I either have to find another contractor, try to do it myself or cover them with carpeting. His work on replacing the baseboard trim was horrendous. There’s gaps between the trim and the floor and the trim and the wall. He did a crappy job at caulking in between and at covering the places where he connected multiple pieces together. He finally finished the job after Thanksgiving - after moving on to someone else’s priority job and then coming back to me. I am HIGHLY DISSATISFIED with the work. In places, it honestly looks like something I could’ve done myself if I had watched a YouTube video. He made me feel like an inferior customer on several occasions as if our job was not important enough for him. I would not recommend his services to anyone I know."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Whether or not you can fix water-damaged baseboards depends on the extent of the damage and the baseboard material. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) baseboards cannot be repaired once severely water-damaged—you’ll need to replace the damaged sections with new baseboards. Wood baseboards may be repaired if the water damage is minimal and only affects a small portion of the baseboard.

New builds, remodels, and additions often necessitate professional framing expertise.

Yes, you can hammer a nail into a wall stud. But before you do, it’s important to confirm that you’re actually nailing into a stud—and not wiring, pipes, or ductwork. To check, find a few more studs in the wall, then measure to make sure they’re either 16 or 24 inches apart.

Any bowing in a basement wall signals an issue that needs to be addressed. However, bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches. That’s why it’s essential to call a pro as soon as you notice the bowing wall. The sooner you address the problem, the easier (and less expensive) it will be to repair.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.
