"Can’t say enough about the care and efficiency with which AC Excavation attacked this project. From the initial site visit to preparing a fair and reasonable estimate, and then clearing the underbrush/overgrowth that overwhelmed whatever desirable perennials we wished to keep around, the crew worked skillfully and diligently on a Sunday morning to give us the blank slate we wanted for a garden bed that was unsightly and downright unpleasant. The regrading of the terrain should also help direct rainwater away from the house. Very pleased with the process and the outcome!"

"We hired FJP Services for both landscaping and do replace a retaining wall between 2 properties. So far, the company has done the retaining wall and they did a great job. The professional nature of the crew was tremendous. The craftmanship of the workers was also gratifying. If the other services we have hired FJP services are at the same level as the work on the retaining wall, we shall be very pleased."

"Absolutely great, friendly, fast, professional and experienced. Goes the extra mile to make sure you are satisfied. I was in a bind when the excavating company I hired could not show up to do some work and we had a pool scheduled to be installed in a couple of days. Improved Earth showed up quickly and did the work (and even did more than requested). They even gave me advice on what to look out for when finishing the pool landscaping and grading. I will definitely use them again in the future and recommend to friends."

Small jobs welcome

"I had a great experience with this handyman. Very affordable, professional, and reliable. He showed up on time, explained what needed to be done clearly, and finished the job quickly without cutting corners. The quality of work was excellent, especially for the price. It?s hard to find someone honest and skilled these days, but this is definitely someone I?d recommend and hire again."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, trenchers can go through gravel. Gravel is made up of smaller, softer rocks that certain trenchers are able to cut through. Just be sure to use a rock wheel trencher or chain trencher, both of which are made to cut through rocky landscapes and gravel pathways without dulling the teeth or chain.

The rules for trenching and excavation include setting up and following safety protocols, learning how to use tools and machines properly, and ensuring there is a safe exit for all workers. Keep heavy equipment and materials away from the edge of the hole or trench. Call the 811 dig line before starting any excavation or trenching project to ensure you don’t hit any electrical or gas lines.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Digging a bush up by the roots is the most natural DIY method for removing a bush stump. Start by identifying the shrub type and revealing its roots. Cut the shrub to its base and loosen the soil, ensuring no utility lines are nearby. Optionally, treat the base with herbicide, then dig around the roots and cut a circle around the shrub using various tools. Dig a trench, cut the base of the root ball, and finally fill the hole to prevent regrowth. This thorough process ensures complete removal without damaging surrounding areas.

Concrete blocks are the cheapest way to base a shed. However, the space in between allows critters to go under, burrow, and even damage your shed’s frame. For a more pest-proof option, consider building a shed base with gravel or paver stones. Both options are fairly affordable and easy enough for a DIY project. For gravel, you can build a wooden frame to contain the loose material.
