"Wow, this is a surprise! We performed this egress window installation almost Five Years Ago! When we arrived onsite on the date of the installation, in January, Mr. [Member Name Removed] did not remove any portion of the fence as part of the proposal he signed. When we asked Mr. [Member Name Removed] about the fence not being removed, he started complaining about how cold it was and how he didn't have enough time to remove the fence. The owner showed Mr. [Member Name Removed] the proposal he signed where he agreed to remove the fence. Mr. [Member Name Removed] then got very agitated but then finally agreed to remove the fence. He then removed 2 sections of the fence, but left the post in the middle of the opening, thereby rendering his fence removal pointless. We asked him about removing the post. He argued that the proposal didn't include removing the fence post. Mr. [Member Name Removed] refused to remove the post and told us to remove the post. We were then faced with a decision. Since all of our equipment was unloaded and ready to go to work: (a) Do we pack up and leave, or (b) Try and make the best of the situation. We chose option "B." The owner walked over to the fence post with Mr. [Member Name Removed] and upon trying to see how frozen the ground was, tried to push the post with his bare hands and the 4 x 4 post snapped in his hands. This happened because the wood post was completely rotted at its base. Mr. [Member Name Removed]' whole problem stems from the fact that HE did not do what HE agreed to do as per the executed proposal. If he had removed the fence as stated in his proposal, none of this would have happened. Mr. [Member Name Removed] could have removed the fence and replaced it himself at no cost, but he chose to pay someone. This is entirely his prerogative. We are not fence contractors, we are egress window installers. Furthermore, if Mr. [Member Name Removed] was so unsatisfied, then why did he pay us, IN FULL, on that very day?"
The only surprise was that I was expecting them to do some amount of framing/trimwork inside the house but instead the window was simply installed and I was responsible for dealing with the hole in the drywall, framing out the interior, and installing the trimwork. In my case, I'm a DIY-type so I didn't mind and it gave me the chance to make a custom window box that allows much more light into my basement. I am NOT dinging them for this miscommunication; it's meant just as a warning to others to ask about all of the details.
If considering a similar installation in the Newtown area, would be happy to show Egress Systems work.
- Gary is very easy to work with and his team are punctual. They showed up exactly when they said they would- not early, not late.
- They are good communicators and kept me informed both prior to the job starting as well as while the work was being performed. My project was originally scheduled for February, but we had to delay to May due to weather/snow. To Gary's credit, he brought his crew and equipment out to start the job but decided to postpone due to the soft ground conditions. I value a contractor that is willing to make the right call for the customer, even if it means that they might lose some revenue short term.
- Gary and his crew performed the work with great workmanship. They were careful to protect our grass with mats and they took the time to excavate precisely and neatly. They did a good job controlling the water and debris from the wet saw in the basement and cleaned up thoroughly after they were done. Our door is hung straight and closes nicely. The Bilco doors are well sealed and we have had no water getting into the basement after two hard rains since the installation.
- My only very minor complaint is that they left the shims used to install the entry door proud after the job was completed. This was very minor and took me 5 minutes to trim with an oscillating tool after they left.
This project took a full 2 days. Day 1 was layout and preparation, excavation of the hole and cutting the basement wall for the door followed by temporary covering of the hole overnight. Day 2 the precast steps were delivered and installed, the hole was back-filled and the entry door was installed.
- Overall an excellent job- I would definitely recommend them to others and would use them again.
my lawn had a few ruts from where they brought in the crane to unload the steps, but that was expected.
I would recommend them for any future work.
We had to reschedule our first install date due to needing to have a gas line moved. I wish I had been more proactive about that. If you even think something like this maybe an issue take care of it early. We also had to deal with very bad, cold weather that delayed us. In the end Gary was able to come out with his guys and do the job at the end of January. They are very professional and did their best to protect our yard. Keep in mind they are using heavy equipment to do this work. Our yard was very wet and soft and it was virtually impossible not to cause damage; however, we needed them in and did not want to reschedule the install. They did the best anyone could have done to minimize the damage to the yard and regraded it even better than when they showed up. Plan on a day per window for the install. In the end I feel like they did a really nice job and that I will not have any issues with the work they did, ever! When the inspector came out he commented that they looked like the real deal! I thought that was a nice complement to Gary's crew.
In the end this is a major job and I think that the guys at ESI did a great job and exceeded my expectations for the work they did. They are very accomodating and gave me many tips and advise. I give them my highest recommendation, they are fair honest contractors.
The work was performed on a Saturday, something that is outside of normal business hours for him, but again he was understanding of my short timetable. He even had family plans later in the day and was still willing to come out. He came early in the morning exactly as he said he would. Gary and his helper were courteous and professional to not only me, but to my wife and 2 daughters. The work was completed in a few hours, and it looked amazing. The window installed was a Jeld-Wen window which carriers a lifetime warranty, and from the research I performed, they seem to be the benchmark to code compliant windows.
Like I previously stated, I am a DIY'er and honestly only joined Angie's list to research Egress window companies in my area. Was I surprised when I saw Egress Systems Inc. at the top of that list? Not at all. As far as I am concerned, they set the standard. Not only in the work they do, but the way in which they perform it. Gary was a hard working, and thorough professional in every aspect of the process, and I would definitely recommend him if you need this work performed.
I now am in my new home, a 47 year old colonial with an unfinished basement. The basement is on the list and Gary will be my first call!
