There are several downsides to choosing casement windows for your home. Firstly, casement windows can cost significantly more than standard windows—especially if you need to install custom windows. If you plan on installing window AC units, then casement windows aren’t the best option, as it can be difficult to fit an AC unit into windows that open sideways or outwards.

The hinges on casement windows also pose a higher risk for break-ins, as rust and wear and tear can make the hardware easier for burglars to break into.

Fiberglass tends to cost more than vinyl and aluminum, while vinyl costs the least but has the shortest lifespan and may have a higher long term cost.

The most likely cause of smearing or streaking after cleaning your windows is residue left on the glass from the cleaner you’re using. Consider diluting the solution and cleaning them again, or use old newspaper to dry the windows after cleaning, as this will soak up any residual material. Additionally, aim to clean your windows on a cool, cloudy day, as cleaners will dry more quickly on the glass if it’s hot and sunny, promoting streaking.

Typically, a bay window is, at minimum, 42 inches wide. That said, you can always design a custom bay window that is smaller—box bay windows are usually less than three feet in width and are ideal for smaller spaces.

The best way to clean outside windows is by using a garden hose. Start by spraying the windows with a high-pressure stream to clear off loose dirt and grime. Then use a mixture of hot water and dish soap and scrub the windows with a sponge. Rinse off the soapy water with the hose. Before you finish up, spray the windows with a solution of vinegar and water and wipe them down with a microfiber cloth.
