15 years of experience

The Building Material Recovery Program is a part of Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. Our goal is to salvage non-structural items from residential and commercial properties prior to demolition or remodels. These items are taken to one of our three ReStore's, located in Beaverton, Portland and Vancouver. Items are then sold to the general public. This benefits our community in so many ways. We help reduce the amount of construction debris going to our landfills, provide low cost building materials to the public, and raises money to help the local Habitat Affiliates build affordable housing in the community. That's not all, as a non-profit the materials we salvage are donated and thus tax deductible (please note, fees are not deductible). We will look at your project for free and let you know how we can help. Some projects require a small fee which can be paid the day of work. Generally, 1-2 weeks of lead time is best. On average kitchens take a half day, on the larger projects the more time we have the more we can save so timing is flexible based on your schedule. We are fully licensed, bonded, and insured in Oregon (CCBI #100310) Washington (#HABITFH896R9). We have a small professional staff with over 30 years of experience in Construction and Deconstruction work.

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Shipping container homes last at least 25 years on average, but they can last even longer with proper maintenance. Since shipping containers are made from metal, they’re quite vulnerable to rust and corrosion. This issue is exacerbated in coastal areas or areas with a lot of precipitation. To extend the life span of your container home, install siding that protects the exterior.

A 2,000-square-foot modular home costs an average of {AvgCost}, and most homeowners pay between {AvgRangeMinCost} and {AvgRangeMaxCost}, depending on the customization options you choose and the quality of materials. If you choose a more custom design and go all out with upgraded finishes, you could pay as much as $600,000.

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

How long it takes to build an in-law suite will vary by type. The time it takes to build an addition will typically be less than for completely new construction. Expect to spend about two months if you convert a basement, attic, or other existing room in your home. New structures can take up to five months, plus up to two months to receive the required permits.

A guest house is not a bump-out addition. A bump-out addition is a small home addition built onto a preexisting room of your house, like a bay window or walk-in closet. While you can do a bump-out addition to a constructed guest house, a guest is not a bump-out addition. Other common bump-out additions are extra living room seating, space for a bathtub in a bathroom, and extra cupboard space in a kitchen.
