"The company was able to respond quickly to an urgent problem with our septic tank. The service technician was polite and professional. Our issue is with the company's pricing practice. They charge a $195 service charge (which includes the first hour of labor). They gave us a $25 discount off the service charge without us menitioning Angie's List at all, so not sure what value the coupon is. Their labor rate is $120/hour - but don't know how that compares in the industry.
We had an electrical connection that shorted out our pump, which prompted our service need. Discussing the situation with the technician we opted to have our electrical connections moved from inside the tank riser to an external splice box. The technician thought they had the splice box in stock, but didn't and had to order it. When the part came a week later the company wanted to charge us another $195 service plus 1.5 hours of labor. I countered that if the company had had the part in stock a second service charge wouldn't have occurred. They reluctantly exchanged the service charge for a routine hour of labor (2.5 hours labor were charged, which is fair).
However, research after the fact showed that the splice box could have been purchased over the internet for as low as $66. I assume their cost was probably lower. They marked the part up to $140! Businesses often markup parts and pass the cost on to the customer, but this amounted to at least a 112% markup. Our biggest issue is with this practice. We feel this cost markup is price gouging, counting on the ignorance of the customer.
One other minor issue: where the previous conduit entered the tank riser a 1" diameter hole remained. They left without plugging this whole, which leaves the tank at risk for dirt getting into the tank. We didn't call them with this issue (it was likely just an oversight), as it wasn't worth the risk of another service charge to have someone come out with a rubber plug.
To repeat, our problem isn't with the overall quality of the service, just the pricing practice. We will seek another company for future service of our septic system.
