"In the early Spring of 2022 we hired Millspaugh to build a 10X24 feet porch over a deck. They gave us a bid which seemed reasonable, and began work shortly thereafter. We were very pleased with all aspects of their work. They were prompt, exactly on budget, on schedule, and very nice people with whom to deal. We highly recommend their services! Sincerely, Dr. J. "We put our exterior house painting out for bid through several home repair sights. We had many replies. Some made appointments to inspect and bid and never showed, some made appointments and had to reschedule, some were way higher priced than we expected. Some were months out to do the job. Ryan with Mitus customs, through Home adviser, was on time and did a thorough job inspecting our house , listened to our concerns, assured us of his qualifications and quality of the materials he used. His bid was very competitive. He started the job on time and finished ahead of schedule. His crew was professional and they cleaned up everything. The house turned out beautiful. Thanks Ryan!"

"Breaking Ground redid our exterior deck. Colby did an exceptional job and we are pleased with the high quality of construction & materials, as well as Colby’s excellent work ethic, trustworthiness & professionalism. It is clear that he has extensive experience and is passionate about wood and building. Colby shows up when he says he will, has good attention to detail and goes above and beyond what he promises, all for a very fair price. I can highly recommend Colby & Breaking Ground!"

"Davidson painting was on time each day, professional, courteous and even came on the weekend. Price was excellent and paint job came out very nice. The owner Doug was friendly, cleaned up each day and I would highly recommend Davidson painting to anyone. My home value went up more than what the painting cost me. Very happy with the job, thank you!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

Wet-sanding and dry-sanding each have pros and cons. Dry-sanding is less messy, so it’s a good option if you’re trying to minimize dust (for example, if you’re sanding an occupied home or working with particularly dry or dusty drywall mud). However, dry-sanding is quicker because you don’t have to keep rinsing a sponge or wait for it to dry before painting.

You don’t necessarily have to remove all the old paint before repainting your deck, but it’s best to remove as much as possible to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish. Prioritize scraping off loose, peeling, or flaking paint, and sand down rough areas to create a smooth surface for the new paint to bond with.

You can refresh a painted deck by either giving it a thorough cleaning or refinishing the deck altogether. Chipped or faded paint, as well as extensive damage, often calls for a new finish. To do this, remove the original coat of paint with a sander and add either a new coat of paint or a stain to protect the wood below.

You should refinish your deck to maintain its appearance, durability, and longevity. Refinishing your deck protects the wood from foot traffic and the elements. It also helps extend its life span by keeping rot, mildew, and termites at bay. By maintaining your deck, you can avoid the cost of replacing your deck sooner. A refinished deck also looks great and restores some of its original beauty.
