They gave me an inspection, provided pictures, and confirmed that I needed a new roof as I had suspected. Having pictures to view though was extremely helpful, as well as an explanation of what was wrong. They then scheduled the work, immediately after a contract was signed and payment was given for half of the work, and completed my new roof in 4 days! It looks beautiful and the Valley Roofing crew work HARDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!! VERY, VERY HARD. You will not be disappointed. The price was reasonable, and they offer a lifetime guarantee on their work, and also explained to me the warranty provided by Malarkey who manufacture the shingles. I worked with their project manager, Joe Johnson. He is wonderful. Very friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. I really, really recommend them to you. But you should note that while, in some cases, you might successfully prevent ice dams from forming near the edge of your roof by keeping it cleared with a roof rake, they could still form higher up on the roof, where you are unable to reach. This may leave you wondering: Does roof raking prevent ice dams? While it is not a 100% guaranteed way to prevent them, it does help.

If a big freeze catches you by surprise and you don’t have any deicer to hand, you can reduce the chance of taking a tumble by laying gritty, anti-slip materials. Some natural, readily-available options that don’t melt ice but offer traction underfoot include sand, wood shavings, kitty litter, and fireplace ash.

If you’re struggling to find anything else suitable in your cupboards, a vinegar and water ice melt makes for a passable quick fix. Just don’t expect it to clear your concrete the way commercial products or rock salt will. Mix equal parts vinegar and warm water and squeegee away the watery slush to prevent more slippery surfaces from forming.
