"I highly recommend David and his company, Rutman Restorations. I had rodents in the crawlspace of my home and the insulation and vapor barrier needed to be removed and replaced. This was no small task, as I have a single story home which has a larger footprint than many two story homes. David and I agreed to an excellent price and timeline. At first I was a little overwhelmed because I could see this was going to be an all hands on deck process. David coordinated work with Summit Pest company regarding the removal of the rodents and even spoke with the HVAC company when we discovered water in one of the ducts. (Which has now been addressed by the HVAC company that installed the A/C). David and his crew went to work right away removing old contaminated insulation and then sprayed the crawlspace with an antimicrobial solution before installing the new vapor barrier and insulation. David always kept me informed as the work progressed. I was happy to see they were using respirators, specialized suits and other safety equipment during the process. The crew worked diligently, had a great sense of humor, they were respectful and kept a positive attitude the whole time. I’ve owned other homes, but this is the first time I’ve ever been involved in the restoration of a crawlspace. I knew I was in good hands with David, Nico, Ben, Nayla and their great crew. Our nearly 100 year old deteriorating brick chimney was leaking water into the interior of the house and had to be repaired. Vasiliy came highly recommended to me by one of the best contractors in Portland, and I called upon him to fix it. The chimney was red brick, but Vasiliy suggested a lighter, golden color brick as it was more economical. Since our house is yellow, the golden color looked even better than red brick would have, and I saved money. The chimney is beautiful, and the repair/rebuild was so well done that Ithink it will last another 100 years,"

The level of insulation is determined by both the material and the thickness of the door. Some garage door materials (such as wood) have natural insulating capabilities, while other materials (such as metal) do not. No matter the material, two-layer and three-layer garage doors have a higher R-value than single-layer garage doors, as insulation is fitted between the panels. 

You do not need to drywall over most types of garage insulation. However, doing so can increase noise reduction, make the space more attractive, and keep children and pets from touching harmful fiberglass insulation. If you’re using cellulose or some other type of blown-in insulation (fiberglass and mineral wool are common), you will need drywall to contain the insulation material.

There are two places where you should not place foam insulation: around electrical boxes or near lightboxes. The foam insulation could get inside the electrical boxes and damage the wiring. Spraying foam too close to a lightbox creates a potential fire hazard; it could also cause damage to the light.

At a minimum, blown-in insulation lasts 20 to 30 years. Cellulose and sheep’s wool come from natural materials, so they likely max out at around 30 years. Fiberglass and rockwool feature artificial materials that boast lengthy lifespans, up to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. As always, this timeline assumes you don’t run into any issues, such as flooding or mold, that shorten the lifespan.

Insulating windows with plastic works, but it can be time-consuming, and the end results can—and often do—end up lacking in aesthetics. Window film and caulking your windows to make sure there are no drafts are two options that increase the energy efficiency of your home in a low-cost way. Plastic can be a good strategy while you consider alternatives.
