Yes. It’s common to have a combination of knobs and pulls for drawers and cabinets. There are usually a few different-sized cabinet doors or drawer fronts that look better with different scales of handles, or you might prefer one type of handle for a drawer front and a different one for a cabinet door. Be sure to choose handles of the same overall type when you mix and match and avoid using more than three types in one room to make sure everything flows together.

Peninsulas used to be all the rage in kitchens, but over the last few decades, they’ve been replaced by the kitchen island. However, that doesn’t mean peninsulas are outdated. If you want to add extra seating and storage to your kitchen but don’t have room for a large, bulky island, a peninsula can be just as beneficial an addition.

Using a shim or another type of self-leveling feet on the bottom edge of your cabinet bases will help to level them out if you’re installing them on a less-than-level surface. To make this process easier, you can add your shims before attaching the bases to your cabinets while they’re still light and easy to move around.

If you prefer not to sand your particle board cabinets prior to painting, you can use mineral spirits and a rough sponge to add some grit to your medium-density fiberboard cabinets so that the paint will still stick. Keep in mind that using 120-grit sandpaper is still the preferred method for preparing your particle board cabinets for a new coat of paint.

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.
