Customers say: True professional

"I love, love, love Mike, my husband gave me grief because he said he was too cheap to do a good job. Boy did my hubby eat his words. Not only did he do an amazing job on the house, driveway and windows. He made my deck look brand new again and replaced the boards on my steps and the railing, as well as installing a new fan (things that my husband was supposed to fix and never did). Lady's if you have a honey do list that never gets done call Quinn services they will do a better job than your husband anyway."

"From the very beginning stages of calling for estimates to the final walk through, Chris and his team were very customer focused and really aimed to please. Chris came out for an estimate in a few days after the call and provided the estimate electronically a few days after the home visit. We were having some trees removed and they were very accommodating about scheduling and timing the pressure wash and actual prep. They were able to tell us what days they would be at the house and when they would be finished with every stage. This was very impressive given the fact that they worked around our schedule and the weather was a factor. The crew worked efficiently and were very neat. No mess at the end of the day. I watched them do two walk throughs one day to make sure they picked up every little thing. We were very impressed with the quality of work, the timing of the project and the exact nature of the estimate. A final walk through revealed one area of trim that was not painted and the crew fixed it on the spot. Several neighbors commented on how nice the house looks and how quickly the team was able to complete the work. I would really recommend Homestead for a great job done by really nice people."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

The time to build a vinyl deck varies based on factors like size, the complexity of the design, and weather conditions. Generally, a straightforward project might take a few days to a couple of weeks for preparation, installation, and any necessary inspections. However, larger or more intricate designs may extend the timeline. Timely acquisition of permits, efficient planning, and coordination with contractors will all help to make the construction process as smooth and quick as possible.

In many areas, a floating deck that isn’t connected to your home and stays under 200 square feet and below 30 inches in height may not need a permit. These freestanding structures are often considered low-risk, which can simplify the building process. However, building codes vary greatly based on location. Before investing in any home improvement project, check with your local permitting office for deck-building guidelines.

Materials for a second-story deck must be weather- and rot-resistant, though the specific choices will largely be determined by your budget and style preference. Pressure-treated wood is on the lower end of the price scale, but it can be customized and stained the way you like it. Composite, on the other hand, is pricier for installation and has fewer options for customization, but you’ll save money and time in the long run because it requires little maintenance.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.
