"Professional, friendly and responsive. I hired Alpha to come do a mold inspection on a home I just purchased. They accommodated my schedule and Chris came early morning before work to do the inspection. He was very friendly, thorough, and went above and beyond to make sure he tested everything I was looking for. He eased my mind and he even gave me home advice outside of just the mold inspection. The inspection price was incredibly reasonable and the bid to do some work was as well. He could have tried to oversell me on things due to my lack of knowledge about mold but in the end my house was in good shape and he eased my worries and gave me peace of mind which was well worth the price! I would highly recommend Alpha Environmental!"

"I am a first-time home buyer and I contacted Scott to perform the inspection on my new townhouse. The building had some known issues and I wanted to be sure that they had been resolved. Additionally, I wanted radon, mold and indoor air quality testing, to ensure that I wasn't moving into a "sick" building. Scott was able to accommodate my schedule on very short notice and he's really great to work with! He gave me all kinds of tips and helpful advice. Working with him was very educational and informative. I highly recommend Scott for all of your home inspection needs. And though some of the tests (such as radon, mold, etc) cost extra, they are well worth the price to ensure that you are investing in a safe and healthy home for you and your family."

"You need to ask the technicians what to do and when regarding the re-test. The information we received was insufficient to know what to do afterwards and our re-test was delayed X 4 days because of lack of communication. Otherwise VERY Happy with the actual work and costs for the work."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

While DIY testing is possible, abatement generally requires professional installation to ensure efficacy and meet safety standards.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to remediate radon yourself. While a radon reduction professional can make the biggest impact in your home, you can make efforts to improve radon levels on your own by sealing cracks, increasing ventilation, and testing for radon regularly.

No, air purifiers are not an effective way to reduce or remove radon. Radon is a radioactive, inert gas that cannot be filtered by standard air purifiers, which are designed to capture particulates like dust and mold. While an air purifier can improve indoor air quality by removing other pollutants, it should not be relied upon for radon. The only effective solution for high radon levels is a dedicated radon mitigation system.

The cost to replace a radon fan ranges from $300 to $600 for the fan itself, with installation adding an additional $200 to $500. Overall, the total cost for replacement can range from $500 to $1,100, depending on factors such as the fan model, home size, and local labor rates. If the fan is part of a larger radon mitigation system, the price may be higher.

You can vent radon out of your house sometimes by simply opening a window, but it won’t remove the source, and will likely rise above recommended levels quickly. A professional will be needed to assess your home, and determine the best strategy for radon removal. Active radon sump pumps and soil depressurization systems are often used to forcefully vent the radon from your home.
