"My carport collapsed from very wet, heavy snow. Even though it was a very busy time for him, Matt Hunter came up with a week of when I contacted him. The final cost of the job was less than his estimate and the new carport is much sturdier and better looking than the previous one. He also installed two handrails for the staircase inside my house and a grab bar in my shower. The cost was more than fair and the quality of the finished work was great. I would highly recommend Matt for any construction project."

"Mahalo has been out to my home 3 times in the past year for the same system. I have 3 of their exterior nits and 6 interior units (All Diakin). They charged me a 179 service fee every time they come out and told me the system was working properly. While having the siding replaced on my house the contractor noted that the drain line for the problematic unit was on an incline. Mahalo came out and moved the system away from the wall for the contractor to work. Moved them back and told me I needed an appointment to get the drain line fixed. The drain line is just a piece of PVC that needed to be shortened and turned about 15 degrees. They came back out a week later to fix the drain line. I asked the technician to make sure that my system was still working properly before leaving by checking the exchange temperature difference. I asked for this because if he did something wrong and it caused my system to stop working I had little faith they would fix the issue for free or in a timely manner. The technician checked the temps and suggested I have the units cleaned for around 399.00. I thanked him for checking and then he charged me 179 dollars for a diagnostic that I did not ask for. He said it was what he came out to do so I paid it and contacted the office to resolve the issue. The manager I talked to said he would speak to the owner and get back to me. The following day he called back and they offered me a discount on the first cleaning for my primary unit. I asked about the diagnostic from the previous day and said I would like a refund on that since I did not ask for the service. After a few minutes of searching the agent told me "How about I refund the diagnostic and we go our separate ways." I asked for clarification because it sounded like he was dropping me as a client after this was my first issue with them. He said, "It sounds like you are wanting more than we are willing to do so we should just part ways." I clarified if he no longer wanted me as a client and he clearly and plainly said "yes that is correct." I thanked them for being professional asked how long until I should see the refund and hung up the phone. Mahalo did a great install. Their technicians are professional in appearance and attitude. However, it is my experience that they do make mistakes. In my previous home they installed in they left a whole line down the center of my house where they moved insulation to install that they did not put back, and at this house, their installation caused damage to a wall that required me to have to pay a contractor to replace the entire wall including multiple studs. It is every company's right to choose to who they provide service. I am disappointed that after spending around 12,000 dollars with the company they no longer want to work with me because I didn't want to pay for a service that I did not ask for. I am sure that people reading this will assume my tone was rude or argumentative but I promise you that after years of working in retail and as a juvenile special needs life skills trainer I maintained a professional and nonconfrontational tone throughout. For anyone wondering I will be going with Addcox heating as they are also local and the people I have talked to that have had issues with Mahalo have ended up with Addcox and claim to be having a much more positive and consistent experience. If I wrote this review a year ago it would be 5 stars. Only over the course of time has Mahalo broken down and failed to meet the level of excellence I had come to expect from professionals."

Buck's Stove Palace is small business that has operating in Portland since 1974. The founder and owner Buck has decades of experience in both new and antique stoves.

"It went smoothly. They always kept in touch with email's & phone calls. They called 1/2 hour before scheduled time to say they were on their way. The laid down mats to protect my floors. The cleaned out the insert and vacuumed all around so not to spill any debris into the room. They were worth every penny. They said the stove was about 600 lbs. They carefully explained about the EPA needed proof that the stove was removed & destroyed which I had no idea it was needed."

I am a fully licensed Residential Contractor. That said, I've chosen to keep my business small and market myself as a Handyman. Unlike your typical handyman or contractor -- I carry a Specialty License that allows me to "legally" work on minor Electrical and Plumbing issues. Things like: lighting, ceiling fans, switches, outlets, appliances, disposals, toilets, sinks, faucets, etc... There are less than 150 of us in the state. I have over 20 years experience in both residential and commercial construction; so I didn't just decide I needed a way to make some money, grab a couple wrenches and screwdrivers thinking I could "fix" things; and start calling myself a handyman. I know code and construction practices, so there is no jerry-rigging going on here (I know that "duct tape" can be used on anything BUT duct work). I'll talk your ear off if you let me, but you'll be well informed about what I am doing and why. I pride myself on maintaining communication with my clients. I'm conscientious, fair, honest, reliable, and take pride in my work. (Yes, I was a Boy Scout – and I'm a retired military officer too). If I can't take care of what you need to have done, or feel you'd be better served by a specific trade specialist; I have developed a professional business relationship with individuals in almost every specialty out there. Individuals I consider to be the best at what they do - be it roofers, plumbers, drywall'ers, painters, masons, electricians, or tile-setters. With me, it's not all about the money, but making sure the customer is spending their money wisely. I know my limits and won't take a job if I feel you'd get a better price or a better result from a specialist. I want you to be satisfied so you'll call me back for your next project and refer me to your friends and neighbors. I'd rather have one person call me 100 times, than 100 people call me one time.

Chimney Caps questions, answered by experts

The minimum recommended slope for a porch roof is 1/4:12, which means 1/4-inch of rise every 12 inches of run. Slopes of 3:12 and 4:12 are more common and provide faster drainage for runoff. Make sure to choose a pitch that’s appropriate both for the climate in your area and the type of roof material you install. Hire a roofer if you need help determining what the right roof pitch is.

The roof overhang, also known as the eaves, does count as part of the roof’s square footage because it must be covered with the roofing material. The overhang is one of the reasons why you can’t base your roof's square footage on the square footage of the house. The roof square footage must also account for the pitch of the roof as well as the eaves.

Your chimney needs a structurally sound chimney cap, protective lining, damper, chimney flashing, and brick and mortar to prevent water from goind down your chimney. A pro can help you identify where the issue is so that you can stop water from coming down the smoke shaft, through your damper, and into your home.

Roofing estimates and inspections are not the same thing. Roofing inspections (whether done with a drone or by the traditional method) help you find any damage or defects on a roof. You will pay a set fee for a roofing inspection and use it to get certification or to determine whether repair or replacement is necessary. Beware of unsolicited contractors coming to your home and offering a so-called free roof inspection—these are often scams.

Roofing estimates, on the other hand, are typically free and offered by a roofing company hoping to earn your business. Some roofing estimates are performed with drones, while other companies will still opt to send people up onto the roof. Either way, the estimate is for roof repair or replacement costs the company wants you to hire them for.

The easiest way to tell if your roof vent boot is leaking is to look in your attic for signs of water damage. You might see visible moisture, water spots, or mold on the roof decking around the roof vent or damaged or soggy insulation below it. If you don’t have access to your attic or aren’t sure if the vent boot is the issue, hire a professional to come inspect your roof and figure out the underlying issue.
