"I would leave 0 stars if possible. Greg showed up, told me what he thought needed to be done, and disregarded my concerns about the main issue being a leak coming from my water heater. He talked down to me as if I were stupid and also didn’t fix the main issue of water squirting out of our water heater and causing water build up/damage in our home, though he did fix the lesser issue regarding our water pressure. He also did random unauthorized jobs throughout the house without asking during my absence and then charged $1200 for his “services.” He refused to send an itemized invoice. My water heater was still actively shooting water out of a valve when he left. A few days later our water pressure went out again. When I called to ask him about his replacing the water pressure regulator, he said “I never did that and I wouldn’t have told you I did that so I don’t even know where you would come up with that. Maybe some other company talked to you about that.” So he either lied to me about work that he never actually did (but charged me for), or he is lying now."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Choosing between an electric water heater vs. a gas water heater comes down to personal preference. Overall, electric heaters are more energy efficient than their gas competitors. They’re also quieter to operate, take up less room, and don’t come with a risk of gas leaks.

The downside is that electric water heaters cost more to operate than gas. They might also struggle to heat water fast enough for households that use large amounts of hot water. Lastly, a power outage could cause your electric water heater to stop working, whereas gas water heaters may still function.

You should replace your gas water heater when it’s reached the end of its lifespan, which is a maximum of 12 years in most cases. If your unit is over a decade old and showing signs of inefficiency, leaks, or frequent malfunctions, it may be time to replace your water heater. Research how to best maintain your gas water heater to help extend its lifespan.

Standard electric water heaters (about 40 gallons) typically need a 30-amp circuit breaker. But if you have a newer model, a tankless water heater, or one that’s more energy efficient, you’ll likely need a higher amperage to power it.

Having the right size circuit breaker for your water heater is an important part of making sure it heats water efficiently and runs safely. A licensed electrician can help you navigate your options, and determine what you need for your new water heater.

No. Boilers and water heaters are not interchangeable because they serve different purposes. A water heater will never be able to supply warm water or steam for your central heating system. In most homes, a boiler and a water heater may be combined to provide heating and daily use of hot water. Other homes may opt for a furnace over a boiler for their heating needs.

It’s important to find the type of water heater that fits your needs and budget. Depending on the type of water heater, size, brand, and the type of energy you use to heat the water, costs range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Some of the most common types of water heaters include:

  • Electric: $600–3,500

  • Gas: $700–$2,700

  • Propane: $700–$2,500

  • High efficiency: $1,500–$3,000

  • Indirect: $1,200–$3,500

  • Hybrid heat pump: $1,200–$3,500
