"Quality Roadway Paving made my drive way look so good!!! In less than 4 hours they moved stuff out of the way, leveled, oiled and smooth the rocks in my big drive way (2900 sq ft). "I was planning on sealing my driveway myself. I did my homework and realized it was beyond my abilities (I have a long driveway). Henry from RNH assessed my needs and made an offer that was very attractive. They started the project late on Saturday afternoon. The crew worked until it was too dark to see. They were almost finished so I approved their return on Monday. It was around noon Roger and Jay returned to do the detail work. They educated me on possible future issues and completed their work. Decomposed granite and caliche can both harden into a solid surface using a plate compactor. However, due to decomposed granite’s fine particles, it’s not suitable for driveway surfaces. Some homeowners use pea gravel mixed with a gravel-binding resin to bind the loose stones and create a solid surface that won’t shift like loose gravel.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

You’ll first need to install a base underneath your pavers for extra stability and drainage. Otherwise, the pavers can sink into the ground, and you’ll have to reinstall them. Use a base gravel layer of 4 to 6 inches for walkways and 10 to 12 inches for driveways. Compact your gravel layer every 2 to 4 inches so it’s nice and solid. After you install your gravel base, apply a 1-inch layer of sand on top.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time.
