The designs are different enough that a conversion would mean more or less fully replacing cabinets to switch between the two. However, if you really like the frameless look but you have face frame cabinets, you may be able to mimic the style by replacing your cabinet doors with full overlay ones.

While a three-inch center-to-center handle is common, there’s no guarantee that sizing will be the same for every cabinet. As a homeowner, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your cabinet installer. Once the cabinets are ready for your home, you can do the following:

  • Ensure pets are safely in another room, out of the way of open doors and large moving objects.

  • Clear countertops for removal.

  • Tidy the floor the installers will walk through and around. 

  • Prepare to have the installers in your home for the entire day, for multiple days, until the project is done. Expect to have a noisy environment, especially if they will remove old, existing cabinets.  

Many cabinets use “J-pulls” or other handless designs. However, frequent use also gets these areas very dirty over time. A simple household cleaner and a soft washing cloth is usually enough to clean these areas when grime builds up. Adding a layer of lemon oil or beeswax can help prevent finishes from wearing off.

If there is only a small mold problem, then you might be able to remove it and save the kitchen cabinets by acting fast. However, if the mold is severe, has spread to other parts of your kitchen or home, or is impacting sensitive family members, then you should replace the cabinets. A kitchen cabinet installation costs between $2,000 and $11,100, or $6,400 on average.
