We met with Mike and he was extremely knowledgeable about what plants, shrubs, and trees would perform well in this climate and in our yard. In addition, he was able to add lighting that looks great. Communication was awesome. We did want a few specific things, but then Mike took it from there and designed wonderful areas of our yard space. Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

Adhere pavers to concrete with either mortar or a concrete-specific adhesive. In most cases, you will also need to lay a permeable sand layer below the pavers to encourage proper stability and drainage in your transformed patio, porch, or driveway. To lay pavers like a pro, always make sure you take the proper preparatory steps before adhering them directly to the concrete.

A gravel driveway can be driven on instantly. While pavers don't technically need to cure, you'll typically be told by a contractor to wait at least 24 hours before driving on any stones or bricks after they've been set. While an asphalt driveway does take up to 72 hours to cure, this is far shorter than the week required for concrete driveways.

The best way to stop your pavers from sinking is to ensure you've properly compacted the base layers. Use your paver compactor and work over the base layer several times to create the hardest possible base. If the soil and sand of your base are compact, you’ll experience less shifting and sinking.

Deciding between concrete, stone, or brick pavers comes down to your budget and the ease of installation. Concrete is the least expensive material, followed by brick and then natural stone. Concrete pavers are also the easiest to install, but bricks are relatively easy as well. Stone pavers require more time and labor because their natural shapes make them harder to fit together. Professional stoneworkers, however, are able to shape them as needed.
