"Could not recommend more after our experience. Exceptional, honest and truly good people doing good work. We bought our home in 2021 and had a chimney inspection. The inspector that came out was nice and was actually the owner helping with inspections with how busy things were with the housing market in 2021. There were several issues he found with straightforward fixes, but the main repair was a stainless steel flue liner. The total cost for everything was $1750. We scheduled the job and they came out a couple months later. Between the inspection and appointment the previous owner retired and sold the company to his employees. They mentioned they were stunned at the price on the order and the good deal we were getting. The materials had been going up so quickly, but also the previous owner hadn’t updated pricing in years. They assured us our price was locked in and were honoring the job quote. This was not said begrudgingly and felt genuine and not a sales pitch. They even seemed happy for us. I mention this to add context. The guys finished the job and the work was good. Unfortunately that winter we had smoke back-flow issues unless the fire was going strong or it would not exhaust properly and bring smoke into the house. They made a few suggestions but nothing seemed to work. We somewhat forgot until the next fall when we tried to use the fireplace again. Same issues. I called Cornerstone and they sent a technician out to check in person. He took measurements. The new owner called me personally to explain that the issue was actually the flue liner. While the installation was correct, and was the biggest that would fit, it was too small and was a miscalculation from the original inspection. We chatted some after I mentioned I’m a small business owner myself and he explained a lot of the changes they had made since taking over to improve their service; new certifications and training he had invested in. The best solution was a new process to coat chimney with a heat shield application and would be an upgrade to any liner, but it was also more expensive. As an upgrade over what we originally had done, he asked if I would pay part of the difference in price since the first job was underquoted by a previous owner. This was a very fair request. But I explained we had been remodeling our home since moving in and were over budget with a lot of surprises including old termite damage, an old botched plumbing job, and pipe burst under a slab in bathroom we had just remodeled. All in November and December before the holidays. I explained that I was tapped for the foreseeable future with no way to absorb more cost. I said that while I understood taking over a business and essentially losing money on jobs you inherited, the fact was that we had paid for every remedy we were told and didn’t have a working fireplace. He understood and took care of us anyway. A crew came and did the repair for free. I really needed a win with everything that had gone wrong and this was it. These are solid guys doing honest work treating people right and is why I’ll be a customer anytime I need chimney work done. I was waiting to write this until after we used the fireplace a while. We went through the whole winter ‘22-‘23 running regular fires with no issues while lit. The only time there was anything even close to a problem was the day after a fire when we had a very slight smoke smell in the house and only because I left the flue open and it was very cold and windy outside. Nothing to do with their repair. That’s how perfectly it works now. So, while I apologize for not writing this sooner, I want to thank Cornerstone Chimney for doing this. Kenny was the main technician and was awesome to work with. I forget the owner’s name, but thank you as well. You all do business right and it is greatly appreciated. Anytime someone has a fireplace need, I recommend you all and will continue to do so."

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

This is a matter of personal preference, as each method has its own pros and cons. Oil furnaces are safer, but the smell can be off-putting to some consumers. Oil is also more expensive than gas. However, oil furnaces boast a higher BTU rate per hour, so a smaller amount of oil can heat a larger space when compared to a gas furnace.

Yes, it can be worth installing a gas fireplace, depending on your home heating needs. The cost to install a gas fireplace can be much lower than the cost to install a comparable wood-burning fireplace. The convenience of starting a fire with the flip of a switch and turning it off just as quickly makes a gas fireplace a big time saver over starting and maintaining a wood-fueled fire. A gas fireplace also does not require ash cleanup or frequent chimney cleaning to remove creosote and other buildup that can lead to chimney fires. Gas fireplaces burn and heat much more cleanly than wood fireplaces.

No, homeowners should never attempt to fix a gas leak themselves. Gas leaks pose serious health and fire hazards. Exposure to leaking gas can make you sick, and accumulated gas can ignite and explode. So always take leaks seriously and seek the help of a pro right away. While you may be able to detect a gas leak, always call a licensed professional to handle repairs and replacements.

Although a gas company supplies gas to homes, connecting gas appliances, like a dryer, is not their responsibility. The primary role of a gas company is to safely deliver gas to a property and maintain the gas supply lines up to a specific point, typically the gas meter or shut off valve. The task of installation is usually taken on by the homeowner or professional dryer installer.

Temporarily capping a gas line—for renovations or during travel—doesn’t require a permit. If you plan to remove a gas line and cap it completely, you’ll need to apply and pay for one through your town or city. Depending on your region and its local codes, you may pay between $25 and $100. To avoid a gas leak or other hazards, some cities take the job of permanently adjusting or capping a gas line out of the hands of homeowners. Instead, they require hiring a professional gas plumber.
