"Leo Taylor came promptly when i called, we discussed the project and he made about three trips to be sure of measurements and how we wanted things done. He gave us an acceptable estimate (lump sum of $4532) but when I asked for a breakdown on the work between the bathrooms and specifics on items,  so I could be sure we were on the same page and what he was going to do for that money, he was offended.  For instance:
1.We talked about removal of Master Bath sunken tub  & platform, with water pipes removal or whatever, BEFORE starting the guest bath.  Is this included or if not how much extra?
2.  We discussed waiting until after the walls and ceiling are painted to decide about how to finish the woodwork ? either painting to match or filling and refinishing as they are.  Is that included or not?
Here is what Mr. Taylor replied. "I appologize that I have created confusion for you. I would like to withdraw my last offer. There appears that a meeting of the minds has not taken place as I had assumed."
I was disappointed because I liked Mr. Taylor personally, but was glad the misunderstanding happened before starting the work. We went with a different contractor, Larry McCasland, and are satisfied with the work and the price.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

Installing an ornamental or decorative porch column takes around three to five hours. Structural columns take longer because your pro has to install a jack to hold up the roof while switching the column out. If there's any structural damage, it can add several days to the timeline to repair the damage.
