"I love my Shelf Genie products. They are very durable and customized to fit my space. Projects include 3 closets, kitchen cupboards, bathroom closet with built in hampers, and my absolute favorite a custom designed craft area with work space for my sewing machine. The designer/installer was very knowledgable and made top notch suggestions on how best to utilize my space. I highly recommend Shelf Genie of Columbus!"

"We were selling our home and needed to downsize the stuff weâ d accumulated for 20 years. I bought an initial package of 25 hours for $1400. Best money ever spent!!! We worked with Jess every weekend room by room, donating, throwing away, and organizing what was left. The house is now ready to sell and Michele is coming in to stage it. Her creativity and eye for what pieces go together is amazing. They also offer power washing and a painter referral, both of which we used and were happy with price and results. We are now hiring the Disarray Doctor to unpack us at our new home, organizing as they go, and suggesting where the furniture and art and rugs will go. We trust them to make it look and function perfectly for us. Hire them right now! You will be so glad you did."

"I interviewed three closet companies to design my master closet and ultimately chose Innovate. Mike Foti was my designer and I feel that he listened to me the best about everything that I wanted in and what I wanted to do with the closet and delivered. He also did something that the other two companies didn’t and that was understand the layout of the space, and how cramped or open it would feel depending on how the design was laid out. That I understood after he sent me his design and gave me time to compare it against the others. Which I did using furniture and boxes to simulate the depths of different shelves, drawers, and hanging spaces. He was right. One design set up the hanging space that made it feel like I was trapped in a narrow galley, and the other missed the mark working around the light switch, electrical outlets, a vent, nor fitting in everything I wanted. When I walk in and out of my closet now I simultaneously can’t believe how much I can put in there, and that it feels as open and “roomy” as it does. I also have to compliment him on his readiness to tweak things in the design when I needed to change some drawer sizes and make a shelf longer to fit certain items. He made sure my needs were met and made sure the closet would be comfortable and look good too. This was a home run!"

"We contracted with LTB Construction to design and remodel our primary bathroom. We are very pleased with the outcome! The owner, Yury, was on the worksite regularly reviewing the quality of work. He also kept us updated throughout the process. We would recommend LTB without hesitation. Job well done!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

When you are securing your DIY home office built-ins to the wall, you should start by locating the wall studs. You'll then want to use long screws to attach the cabinets, shelves, and bookcases directly to the wall studs. Your built-ins will be far too heavy to attach to the drywall alone by using anchors.

The differences between a built-in closet and a walk-in aren’t that different from a built-in wardrobe and a walk-in closet. It’s fairly simple—a walk-in closet is a closet you can physically enter, stand in, and walk around in. A built-in (whether wardrobe or closet) is more akin to covered shelves installed into a recess in the wall. Another big difference is walk-in closets almost always have traditional full-size doors, while built-ins either have no doors or use sliding doors.

There are a few reasons custom closets are expensive: materials used, the luxury factor, and time to build. The people who can afford custom closets are those who can afford increased rates, and construction workers and contractors know this and charge accordingly. The time to build custom closets is substantial, especially if expensive material is being used or intricate details (like carved wood) are added to the project.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.
