After speaking with several pool contractors, all of whom either did not win our trust or they simply never got back to us, we found this incredible team. Throughout our journey towards pool ownership, we encountered many people, several bids from local pool contractors, and many disappointments. Yes, it is possible to drill into concrete with nothing more than a regular drill. However, it will take more time and more effort on your part. You also need to watch out for overheating and wearing out the drill bit. Using water can help lubricate the bit and prevent overheating.

The standard thickness for a concrete driveway is four inches for an area that holds cars and pickup trucks. Larger vehicles like motor homes, heavier trucks, and trailers should be thicker to accommodate the added weight without cracking. Plan to pour concrete five inches thick for driveways that need to accommodate large, heavy vehicles.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

You can pour concrete over asphalt if it’s in good condition, thick, stable, and well-compacted. Concrete is more durable than asphalt and can extend the lifetime of your driveway without having to pay frequent asphalt driveway repair costs or replace it completely. 

But this is best reserved as a temporary solution based on budget restraints, as asphalt requires more frequent repairs and assessments than concrete. Once that concrete top is poured, it’ll be harder to accurately understand what’s happening beneath that layer, which could lead to more issues.
