"Derik and his crew did a great job on resurfacing our bedroom doors, hardware, and repainting them. They look better than I expected! They also restored our old, heavily painted stair risers and sideboards to prepare for a carpet runner. These, too exceeded my expectations. Uncle D’s price was fair and a lot of work went into this project. I would recommend Uncle D’s painting to anyone!"

"Chris with Friesen Family Renovations, LLC was very professional and thorough in the work he has completed. He installed a new screen door, replaced my tub stem and faucet, repaired my subfloor in the kitchen and installed brand new LVP flooring to replace old and water damaged flooring. He also mounted a television for me, and did some drywall repairs as well. I would recommend this business to anyone looking for quality and dependable work!"

"There was a laundry list of small to moderate repairs needed for point-of-sale inspection plus a little drywall refinishing from a recent plumbing issue. Mike and the crew at The House Doctors handled scheduling with both tenants, all supplies and materials, and completed the repairs pretty quickly. The price was a bit higher than I was hoping, but to have someone who could handle all the aspects of the job (painting, windows, small electrical, minor masonry, downspout, siding, pressure washing) was very convenient."

"The guys were friendly, helpful, and left the house the way they found it.  They did an awesome job.  The walls look like brand new drywall as opposed to drywall covered in patches.  They were also helpful with painting and decorating tips as I painted the walls myself after the work was completed.  I expect to hire them again to complete similar work in the remaining rooms of the house."

"Filled in an unevenly cut hole in the drywall cut out by the plumber who had to replace a bathroom main outlet pipe.  I was told by James that an uneven cut is typically standard in such cases of difficult access for bathroom outlet pipes.  James did encounter a rather difficult problem because of the location the drywall had to be cut, and, yet, James' excellent skill placed the new drywall evenly throughout the new piece replacement.   The drywall job done by James was excellent.  James fixed the wall so well it is completely undetectable that a hole was made in that part of the drywall.

"I am so pleased with the drywall repair work just completed at my home. After a pipe leak resulted in damage to my kitchen ceiling and wall and upstairs bathroom wall, Craig came in and made everything new again. Walls and ceiling are back to normal and paint-ready! I highly recommend Craig. He’s a very nice guy who was very thorough, very neat and very fair. I know you’ll be pleased too!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

There are a few ways to figure out if your walls are plaster or drywall, but the pushpin method is probably the easiest option. To try it, choose a part of your wall where you can insert a pushpin or thumbtack without leaving an obvious mark. If it goes in easily, you have drywall. But if the wall is tough to penetrate, that’s plaster.

When used correctly, drywall patch kits can work well. However, there are limitations. Specifically, these kits can only cover holes up to 5 inches in diameter. For anything larger than that, you’ll need to cut out the affected section of drywall and replace it with a new piece. That’s a far more complicated process that involves buying the right type of drywall, finding the wall studs, cutting into your wall, and screwing the replacement drywall in place.

A post-drywall inspection could uncover many problems that weren’t present during the pre-drywall inspection, including insufficient insulation, missing weather stripping, improperly installed plumbing and lighting fixtures, flooring damage, drywall damage, plumbing leaks, aesthetic issues, and more. Structural problems, which are often expensive to fix and are common reasons to walk away after a home inspection, are easier to see before the drywall goes up, but a post-drywall inspection may highlight minor issues with house settling and foundation problems.

Drywall insulation costs around $1,800, on average, but prices can range from $500 to $4,500, depending on a few different factors. The following things are important considerations to make when pricing out your insulation project:

  • Square footage of insulation

  • Type of insulation

  • Climate in your area and the insulation R-value required

  • Whether or not your walls are already finished

  • Accessibility of the area

  • Whether or not you need old insulation removed first

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.
