Yes, you can put hot pots on concrete countertops, but only if they’ve been properly sealed. While the concrete itself is heat-resistant, the sealant may not be, meaning heat may discolor the sealant, so use caution.

A pergola needs to be anchored, and typically, concrete is the best anchor option. Pergolas should be anchored to a concrete slab or concrete footings, and this is commonly required by municipal building codes. When applying for a permit to install a pergola, be sure to check the anchoring requirements as well.

Concrete dries faster in the heat than in the cold, but when concrete cures too fast, it can cause weak concrete. It’s best to pour concrete when temperatures are between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, watering it five to 10 times per day for seven days (unless you pour concrete in the winter). Slower cure times, such as when pouring concrete in cold weather, can cause strong concrete, but you need to monitor the temperature drop and moisture levels. Avoid pouring concrete when temperatures are below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

A layer of exposed aggregate concrete should be 1 to 2 inches thick if you’re installing it on top of existing concrete. If you’re pouring a new slab with the finish, slab thickness will depend on the application. Exposed aggregate concrete driveways should be 4 to 6 inches thick in most cases or 8 to 12 inches for commercial vehicles. Sidewalks, patios, and walkways should be 4 inches thick.
