"Dwight Miller (DMiller Mechanical) came to our house to give us a quote on replacing our 20 year old geothermal furnace that we’ve been pouring money into for repairs and also to replace our 20 year old hot water tank. He was 1 of 3 contractors invited to price his services He did a detailed examination of our current systems and explained our options in an logical, no pressure manner. He also provided a firm quote in writing for the cost to do the job. We thanked him for his time while we waited on the other 2 contractors to give us their quotes over the next few days Price is not always the final factor when spending the hard earned money we were about to spend One contractor was less expensive and one was way more expensive. Dwight’s quote was somewhere in the middle We chose Dwight and his team for a variety of reasons: He could do the job very quickly verses waiting 6-8 weeks He was local. You want someone that can meet your needs if problems arise. His is a family owned business. His income and livelihood depends on his reputation (high marks on HomeAdvisor) The personal connection we felt in our spirit with Dwight. He is a like minded, kind hearted Christian business man It turns out that Dwight was the correct person to deal with. Dwight and his adult sons(experienced professionals themselves) showed up each day when they said they would They went out of their way to protect the interior of our home during the tear out of my old systems and the installation of the new units This was a large, labor intensive, skilled job. They took the upmost care to make sure the installation was perfect. Duct work was hand crafted to attach to my existing ducts After the multi-day job was completed they hauled away the old units. They throughly cleaned up the work area. You couldn’t even tell someone had just worked there when they had finished Dwight then took the time to fully explain to my wife and I how the controls worked so that we understood them. This long winded review is for the purpose of stating: If you want an honest, hard working Christian family business that is very professional and makes sure you are happy with the results, then DMiller Mechanical is the company you SHOULD hire to do your heating and cooling work. He is the real deal and I highly recommend that you hire him with NO reservations You won’t regret it"

"The weather is getting hot and of course that is when my air-conditioning unit started to not provide the cool air I needed. That is when I immediately placed a call to Zoned Comfort Heating and Cooling. I have used them before and they have been dependable and responsive to an individual's needs for cooling and heating. Andy, (the technician for Zoned Comfort) arrived at the time promised and immediately began to diagnose the problem with my air-conditioning unit. He explained all he was doing as he worked. He is a diligent professional with great courtesy, a pleasant demeanor and one who is a great representative for Zoned Comfort. He wasted no time getting the work done efficiently and effectively. He made sure the job was done to his satisfaction, and mine. I would recommend Zoned Comfort Heating and Cooling to anyone needing such service. When I replace my "ancient unit" I plan to call on Zoned Comfort for this service also."

"I called Mark on a Tuesday about my old furnace which was acting up. He came over THAT AFTERNOON and with the information he gave me, I decided that it was time to replace it. On Thursday of that week I came home from work and the new unit was installed! Mark and his crew are professional, clean and knowledgeable. I have great peace of mind knowing that they did the work and that I paid a fair price."

"The comfort consultant was very professional. He presented possible solutions and discussed the extent of work that would be needed to reach my goals. He assured me their workers were top notch, dependable and trustworthy. I found all of this to be true. They always covered their shoes as they entered the house. They had to move all kinds of stuff in the basement and attic to complete the job. They even fixed a ceiling fan in a bedroom as it looked like they may have knocked it loose, when in fact it had been that way for years (Bonus!). Everyone I worked with from the receptionists to the workers were very nice and helpful. I would recommend this company. They are excellent! PS - Thank you for the lunch kit full of cookies. Yum :D"

"This is a mixed review.  The whole thing is kind of long winded so, I'll give you the bottom line
first, and if you're interested, you can read the gory details second.
Bottom Line
The price for the repairs was too high for my budget and I didn't use their service. However, the initial diagnostic survey at $79 (less the $30 Angies List Coupon) Was worth every cent.
Gory Details
Repairman #1 arrived toward then end of the time window I was given.  A nice young man, very conscientiously put on paper shoe covers so as to not track in dirt.  I explained the problem:  I have an old hot water-baseboard heating system.  The original boiler (circa 1960's).  The house has an addition and the previous owners had added three zone valves.  A fourth "zone" had no zone valve and was on all the time.  Our situation was that we had scorching heat in a small section of the house, and none in the rest.
Repairman #1 discovered that two of the zone valves were stuck closed and couldn't find the third.  There were things about the installation that puzzled Repairman #1 and he admitted that he doesn't evaluate boiler systems too much, most folks have forced air.  He made arrangements to have Repairman #2 come out the next business day, who was an expert on hot water heat, and there would no additional charge.  Of course, I agreed.
Repairman #2 came out at the prescribed time.  Again, another very nice, cordial person, a little older and he was well briefed from Repairman #1 - but he was still interested in listening to what I had to throw into the mix.  My impression of him was VERY positive.  He was confident in his work, knew what he was looking for and explained everything he was doing along the way.  He spent a lot of time figuring out where each pipe was going, which were supply and which were returns.  He quickly confirmed that the two zone valves were stuck closed and then with a very cool camera on a flexible wire that he stuck up above a section of finished ceiling, he found the missing zone valve (which was also stuck closed - but he managed to open it manually!)
He went to his truck to make a call and work up a repair price.  About ten minutes later he came back in and sat down to explain his findings.  He said that the house is really kind of small for a zoned system (1,600 sq feet ranch) and that he thought we should simply remove all the zone valves and replace them with copper pipe to match the system.  He said it would be best to add a few bleeder valves to make the refill process more efficient now and in the future.  He couldn't offer a solid price because of all the variables, like two of the valves are up in the rafters - very tight space to work in and soldering so close to the wood rafters is a fire hazard.  But, he did say it would probably take the better part of a day at $175 per hour plus materials.
I did the math in my head and my jaw hit the floor.  He was estimating $1,400 in labor and I guessed a couple hundred more in marked up material.  I was ready to spend $500 - $600 to get the job done, but maybe $1,600 was out of the question.
I've repaired copper pipe myself, I was aware of the fire hazard thing he was talking about.  But, I figured I wasn't the first one to face that problem, and they must have some kind of a fix for that. From my previous experience, I knew that sweating / soldering copper pipe still wet from just being filled with water is a suckers game.  I was NEVER able to get a solid seal on wet pipe.  The pipe had to be bone dry - period.  I thought I could do this repair myself, but it would take a long time to let the opened pipes dry out.  We're in early November and leaving the heat off long enough to dry the pipes, was out of the question.
Sadly, I was thinking that we would have to limp through a hot / cold house through the winter and I would do the repair next spring / summer.
I thanked Repairman #2 for his time and expertise and told him that I couldn't afford the repair.  He offered to install a new boiler along with the repairs for $4,500 - a real "deal" on a new boiler and full repair.  Of course the new price wasn't much of a tease when I couldn't afford the repair that cost about one third less.  I again thanked him and we parted cordially.  The whole evaluation cost $49 after using a $30 coupon found here on Angie's List.
But here is the final chapter!  The next day I mentioned all of this to a friend at work. He suggested I look into using SharkBite connections.  The Sharkbite connectors simply push on - no soldering!  They connect to copper, PVC and PEX flexible tubing.  "If you can use Lego blocks, you can use Sharkbite connectors", he said.
I did look into it and the demonstration videos online looked too good to be true.  Fast, easy, approved by code, solid no leak connections, and they say you can seperate connections easily with a special tool.
I bought the connectors at a local big box store.  I cut the first old valve out with another cool tool I found made to work in tight spaces. I put the special connectors easily and slipped in a new piece of copper in between.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that this process took about 15 minutes.  It took longer to drain and refill the boiler!
I was going to do the second valve at the same time, but discovered I needed a slightly different kind of fitting.  No big deal, let's test out what I did so far.  I refilled the system, bled out the air, fired up the boiler and Sha-zamm!  The connection was rock solid!
I spent $49 for the evaluation, $15 for the connectors, used some copper pipe I already had from a previous project, and about three hours time.  (draining, refilling and bleeding took the lions share of that time.)  And, we have heat!  Well, we have more heat.  I need to get the other connector thing and do it again for the remaining stuck valve.
While Weatherking was too expensive to perform the work, I can't complain about the expert evaluation.  Hence, the mixed review.

"It went well with the workers arriving when expected and cleaning up when done. It took them 2 days. They did a great job and were cheaper than another one of our estimates.
We decided to get some insulation following a report from Dominion's Home Energy Audit Program called GoodCents which told us that our over 100 year old home had almost no insulation.
North Coast Insulation is a company recommended by Angie's List and one that often works with GoodCents. GoodCents came out after the insulation was installed and inspected it. We were told that the air leakage from the house had gone down 40%. We also will get over $1000 back from a rebate.

"I got a Living Social for them, which covered 10 vents for $75. What I didn't realize/understand is that my house has 22 vents, plus the two main ducts need to be done. Each vent was $15, and the main ducts were $50 each. Definitely good to know in the future that there are projects like this that are much bigger than I expected!

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

The best time of year to purchase or replace an HVAC system, including components like an air conditioner or furnace, is during the off-season—spring and fall. During these periods, HVAC professionals are less busy than in summer and winter, when extreme temperatures create urgent demand. Shopping during the off-season can lead to savings of 10% to 15% on an AC unit and allows you more time to find the best deal and other cost-saving incentives. Typically, air conditioning units go on sale in the fall after demand drops, while furnace prices tend to decrease in the spring.

Propane is more cost-efficient than natural gas on a per-unit basis because it produces twice as much heat energy as an equivalent amount of natural gas. But propane is not ideal if you already have a gas line installed. The best choice for your home depends on the efficiency of your appliances and the amount of installation required of your fuel choice.

Since your boiler keeps you warm and provides hot water to your home, you’re likely to notice issues with heating in your living space right away. The most obvious sign that your boiler is breaking is not getting any heat or hot water. You might also hear some odd sounds coming from your boiler during operation, the flame in your gas boiler is not blue, the pressure is inconsistent, or your boiler is using more energy than it should. If you notice any of these signs, be sure to call a pro right away.

One of the easiest ways to determine which type of furnace will work best for your home is to contact a professional in your area. Many HVAC companies offer free consultations to help potential customers determine if they need a new system and which type would work best for their home and the community’s climate.

If your boiler is 20 years old, it’s time to get a new one. Although it may seem to be working fine, it’s likely eating up more fuel than it should. Also, compared to a brand-new boiler, one that’s 20 years old is probably not working as well. When you get your new unit, you’ll notice that your home is heating more quickly, and the heat is consistent throughout all the rooms.
