Merkle Lawn Care Company
Merkle Lawn Care Company
Family-owned and operated business since 1987. Our management team has over 95 years of experience. Supervisors are licensed applicators of fertilizer and herbicides in Kentucky/Ohio/Indiana. Staff is thoroughly trained and evaluated in use of all equipment, installation, and maintenance. We are an active member of: Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Kentucky Nursery Landscape Association, and Kentucky/Ohio/Indiana Pesticide Licensees. Our company employs 45 full-time and 20 part-time employees. We carry all General Liability, Worker's Compensation and Equipment Insurance and have the ability to be bonded for Bid and Performance Bonds. Estimates/Initial appointments are free of charge.
"Beware of Merkle Landscaping The short version- work that was pointed out during the walk through with both the company representative and the men who performed the job was not completed. When asked, the company refused to negotiate a settlement. Update- 45 days later, all but two of the small trees and shrubs in the area are growing back. The full story- When I walked the job with the Merkle Landscaping representative I specifically pointed out three honeysuckle shrubs to be removed that were the reason why I hired them. I said that my adult sons and I had broken two shovels trying to dig out the bushes and that was the reason I needed to hire outside help. When the contract was written it did not stipulate specifically the removal those three shrubs, but it also did not say that the workers would only use hand tools. It said what the “crew daily rate” was. Neither party stipulated that the crew would be two men with hand tools or two men with a stump grinder. When I walked the job with the crew, I again pointed out that the bushes were the most important part of the job. They worked very hard and did a good job but left the three stumps from the shrubs after cutting off the branches. They have already sprouted and will be the same size next year. The problem was that the workers did not speak enough English to understand that this was the beginning point of the job. Our communication was limited, so the stump removal was missed again. When I called the Merkle representative I offered to pay more for them to get rid of the stumps but I asked for a concession to pay half the hourly rate for the extra work. My offer was turned down by the Merkle representative because in the contract it says that they are not liable for anything that is unseen or not marked. The pine stump from the tree I had removed years ago was clearly visible and located within 5 feet of these three shrubs. I mentioned that the large pine stump could stay because it was dead. Pine trees with more than a foot diameter at the base have root systems larger than 5 feet, so the shrubs were likely to be tangled in the roots of the former tree. Also, I mentioned breaking two shovels trying to get the shrubs out. When you agree to a contract with Merkle Landscape make sure that you stipulate specifically what you want done. The workers did the job as described to them by their boss, but my desires for this job were lost in translation and the job that I requested was not the job completed. Before you commit to any work with this company understand fully that if the job you want is not done, the owner will not make it right. Update: 45 days later all but two small trees are growing back."

"We hired Poffs to do quarterly lawn treatments and they completely ruined our yard. According to them they used expired chemicals that killed our grass and caused striping where the guy missed spots. We have now had to get our yard aerated and have spent a lot on grass seed to try to start growing our grass back again. This has been extremely embarrassing as this company was supposed to help keep our yard beautiful and now it is the eye sore of the neighborhood."

Emes Lawn Care & Snow Removal LLC
Emes Lawn Care & Snow Removal LLC
Lawn Care, Grass Cutting, Landscaping
"Work: Came out quickly. Did a fairly good job getting the yard cleaned up. Couple of minor issues. They moved the leaves out to the street for local pickup. Not a huge deal but was expecting the leaves gone. Only cut a portion of the yard because the mower wouldn't fit through the fence. Fair enough but had a issue with billing explained below. Price: This job was billed hourly, per person on the job site. 4 People onsite but they only charged for 3. Job took about 3- 3.5 hours to complete. Which feels long considering the size of the property and the size of the team. At roughly $120/hour that adds up. Again considering the leaves weren't taken and dumped. But moved to the front of the property and onto the street. Billing: This is where the lower score comes in. Appears I was charged for half the mowing when only the front was cut which accounts for about 15% of the yard. No reduction in price for moving leaves for local pickup and not having to pay to dump. Invoice is not itemized breaking down the hours for work completed. So it's hard to confirm other than some quick math. Unclear how to pay them on the invoice. Turns out you pay through their website. The only method accepted is credit card and they charge you a 4% surcharge to pay via credit card. This doesn't sound like much but when you are doing lawncare and it's a large cost, this charge to pay your bill can grow very quickly. Even at just a modest amount of work done, the surcharge to pay them was about $20."

Whether organic or synthetic fertilizers are better for your lawn depends on your goals, budget, and plans for other lawn treatments. Organic fertilizer costs more but is likely to benefit your lawn more in the long run by improving the soil as well as feeding your grass. Synthetic fertilizers get faster results but don’t enrich the soil and may contaminate nearby bodies of water if you live on a shoreline. A hybrid fertilizer may be an option to give you the benefits found in both organic and synthetic fertilizers.
