"We hired Mario's Landscaping of Cincy to provide a spring cleanup and make some changes in our current landscaping. We added rocks and block edging in some areas and kept mulch in other areas. Mario was great in helping us find just the right rocks and edging that we desired. His crew did a fantastic job in every aspect. We especially appreciated the attention to detail that he provided to make everything perfect and meet our requests and expectations. Also, his pricing was very reasonable. We highly recommend Mario's Landscaping of Cincy. You definitely will not be disappointed."

"Dan and his team transformed our front and back yard landscaping! Dan displayed a wealth of knowledge. He was the only landscaper we had who came out and actually drew out everything he was thinking to do during our consultation. My husband and I are very pleased with everything his team has done. The crew was always on time and ready to work. I watched the guys working through my window and the craftsmanship and attention to detail was top notch! They built not just a landscaping wall, but truly a statement piece! I’ve seen neighbors walking their dogs stop and admire the front of our house since Melena Landscaping transformed our yard. I can’t thank the team enough for such a beautiful job they did. I would highly recommend them to everyone who asks!"

"We are so pleased with our experience with Rob and his team! We had reached out to nearly 25 companies to get quotes for our patio project. Serene Aqua Landscaping was one of only two companies that returned our phone calls. Our project was unique in that we live at a condo, so you have to get a drawing and scope of work submitted to our condo association for approval. Serene Aqua Landscaping was the only one to send us the required drawing, so they really stood out to me from the start. Rob has been a great communicator throughout the process and timely responded to my multiple emails before, during, and after project completion. His team of guys are hard-working, respectful, and meticulous to details. It is not easy working at a condo, but the guys were always mindful of the other residents and cleaned up their work space every evening. We have gotten so many positive comments about patio from the condo association and other residents. We love our patio and use it every day! Thanks Rob and your team for a fantastic job! -Mike & Laura"

"We engaged Outdoor Design Build to complete an outdoor renovation to our 100 year old home including a new 2 car architecturally correct garage, all new landscaping, all new hardscapes (multiple patios, stone steps, fire pit and seat wall), multiple retaining walls, stone work, driveways and significant regrading throughout the property.  David was fantastic to work with throughout the design and estimating process.  Given the size and scope of our project David was very reasonably priced.  Once the project kicked off, his team was a pleasure to work with, everyone was professional, knowledgeable and friendly.  All of his crew have been with David for many years and they take pride in their work, which was a key reason for selecting them.  I am a very meticulous individual and enjoy getting into the details of projects, while some contractors find hands-on homeowners an annoyance, David and his crew embraced it and brought me into every decision so that we minimized issues and rework.  David and his crew were open to new ideas, incorporated slight design tweaks on the fly, and worked with me to address items that we had mutually put off until we could "field verify".  They also fixed issues promptly and worked through the final punch list without complaint.  David and his crew did a great job communicating both on a daily basis and overall and were always easy to get hold of. In the end, I got exactly what I wanted!  We couldn't be more thrilled with the final outcome of the project and we take every opportunity to show it off.  I would highly recommend David Underhill and Outdoor Design Build for any sized outdoor project and would definitely hire him for future projects.  "

"The response from the owner has been fabulous. A whole team showed up. They pointed out a roofing issue that will need repaired. The quality of their lighting is great and they guarantee the price for 3 yrs. Call them if you are in need of Christmas lighting. I think they also provide mowing services. Nice people!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

As much as you might try to keep a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn, you still may notice signs of St. Augustine decline (SAD)—a viral disease that discolors your grass blades. St. Augustine decline looks like:

  • Discoloration in the leaves (chlorosis)—leaves appear yellow and splotchy

  • Decline in growth

  • Leaves turn black within 3 years

  • Grass appears less vibrant

  • Grass begins to thin

  • Root rot

  • Grass takes longer to recover

In most cases, buying plants from a local greenhouse or nursery is well worth the investment, even though they tend to be a bit more expensive than those at a home improvement store. Employees at nurseries are usually well-versed in gardening and understand how the climate in your area affects different plants. They can help you make selections based on your skill level and time commitment to your landscaping, and they can provide detailed care instructions and advice to help keep your plants alive and diagnose and treat issues like pest infestation and illness.

If you use the wrong plants for your gardening zone, you’ll likely get less than desirable yields from them. In some cases, your plants can even die. It’s important to ensure that your plants are able to survive in your hardiness zone before getting them into the ground.

You should avoid planting grass, shrubs, plants, and trees in freezing temperatures, as the ground can get frozen and become too hard for proper root growth. It’s best to plant in the fall to allow your plants to establish root systems before the first frost. Landscaping when the average temperature in your area is between 50 and 60 degrees will usually deliver the best results.
