"If you're in the market for custom woodworking, start here. Derek was excellent to work with. He was very responsive, receptive to our ideas, and willing to make suggestions where our vision wasn't clear. He is extremely detail-oriented and won't 'call it a day' unless and until the work is done correctly and meets his and your standards. The nook is solid and structurally sound, and the design flows perfectly with existing cabinetry. Everyone (professionals, family, friends) who enters our home comments how beautiful the nook is, and we wholeheartedly agree. Custom woodworking is a dying (if not lost) art, and Derek is one of the few remaining contractors in the area who has perfected it."

"Robin and his team did a great job on the exterior of the house. We had quite a few trim boards that needed to be replaced prior to painting. They did a great job painting the trim and the stucco. The house has never looked better. I highly recommend this company."

"We were looking for a wood worker/ reputable carpenter and found Dave's here on Angie's list. I called for an estimate, and Dave the owner promptly came out to estimate a portion of my entrance door that needed some wood replaced, and a new storm door we needed installed.  He was very informative and you could tell he was honest and very personable. He gave me hope for repairing the door frame instead of replacement, I was sold!He set up a time to come out depending on weather, since most of the work was outside. The day he came it was on/ off showers, Dave showed up right on time and smiled right along as he went about his work, he was very respectful of our house. The door was quite the mess, but he restored the bad pieces of wood on the threshold and door jam with cedar wood to insure it would last, and then installed the Larson storm door we had bought at Lowes.
The project turned out fabulous! I will call Dave back for future projects, and recommend to my friends and co-workers.Dave has faith, and honesty something I wish every contractor could have.  My Husband and I are truly blessed to have found Dave's Carpentry.,"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

While carpenters and woodworkers perform similar tasks, their focus differs. A carpenter is typically responsible for the structural woodwork involved in construction, such as framing, installing sheathing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and installing trusses. In contrast, a woodworker handles more intricate and custom projects, like building custom furniture, installing wainscoting, and creating detailed interior trim and moldings. Based on these definitions, many woodworkers can perform the tasks of a carpenter, but it's always best to discuss your specific project with a professional to ensure they have the necessary skills.

Many people, including professionals in the field, use baluster and spindle interchangeably to describe the vertical components of a railing (or technically, a balustrade). However, there are subtle or distinct differences, depending on who you ask. The most common interpretation is that spindles are thin or delicate versions of balusters.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Most contractors do not charge for meetings, but it can depend on the project, mainly if it includes detailed consultations or project planning. For general estimates, homeowners shouldn't expect to be charged. Always ask up front about meeting fees to avoid surprises and ensure you know what’s included in the process.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.
