"They came out to start the project (9/19/25) just as it was getting dark outside which was my first clue something isn't right with this company. Less than a month after having new asphalt installed, weeds are poking through and causing bulges. They have several areas where the asphalt is uneven and "bowled" areas where rain collects in the middle. Several locations where it wasn't filled in and several cracks within the first day. I contacted the company several times to come back to fix the issues. They responded saying they'll be back out on certain day, but always had excuses only when prompted on why they never showed up. Now no responses after a month. Several of the neighbors had this company installed asphalt on their driveways. All have complaints on how unsatisfied with the job they did. I measured and only get about 1" thickness when the contract clearly states 2.5" poured and will be 2" after rolling the final surface. Photos were taken next day and the weed photos are about a month after install when I noticed (10/23/25). Going to be interesting to see it after it's first winter when ice heave breaks it up even worse."

When I attempted to contact him to discuss, he refused to return calls, emails, and texts. I did not expect everything about the project to go smoothly. Overall, a paver driveway is considered the easiest to maintain because homeowners are able to do driveway repair one piece at a time without impacting the rest of the driveway. Unlike paved options, paver driveways contain individual stones that aren't physically connected. By comparison, you may need to reseal or redo a full asphalt driveway if just one portion sustains a significant crack.

Asphalt is not the same thing as blacktop. Blacktop is a type of asphalt, but contains less bitumen, making it less durable than asphalt. Asphalt is a better option for major highways, streets, and driveways, while blacktop is more suitable to playgrounds.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

Depending on project size, typically 1 to 3 days, including preparation and installation.

Recycled asphalt is not better than gravel, but can be a good alternative. It is inexpensive, but not as low-cost as gravel, and doesn’t tend to last as long. Recycled asphalt isn’t as dusty as gravel and is more environmentally friendly. The black look can be something that homeowners prefer. No matter what, ensure you choose an experienced recycled asphalt contractor.
