Hard materials like wood or vinyl flooring on stairs can look great but can also be slippery, posing a risk of injury. On the other hand, carpet often has much more traction, is a lot softer and cushioned, and is still aesthetically pleasing. With all this in mind, carpet is the ideal choice for stairs. 

Carpeting has a few benefits on stairs in addition to being a cost-effective floor covering. It absorbs sound, dampening footsteps. It also provides additional traction, which is especially important if you install linoleum floors, epoxy flooring, or any other floor covering that can become slippery if you’re wearing socks. Therefore, carpets can help prevent slips. 

There are a couple of color options to consider when installing carpet in high-traffic areas (like entrances and stairways). Medium-toned colors and patterned carpets can work well in these parts of your home because dirt and stains can blend in easily. Dark carpets will also conceal marks and spills, but they show lint and other light-colored debris. Consider a medium brown or tan for your high-traffic areas. Either way, it’s best to avoid paler shades, like white and cream, which get dirty easily.

If you have a dark carpet and are going for a lighter look, you should replace it, rather than dyeing, since you can only go darker with dye. If your stains are too heavy to mask with carpet dye or the carpet is more than 10 years old, you should also consider replacing it.

It’s a good idea to install a rug pad under the carpet for your stairs. To make the pad fit, you’ll need to cut one section for each stair tread that’s about one inch narrower than the stair runner so that it won’t be visible once the carpet is installed on top.
