"Deck Renewal Systems delivered a beautiful, quality deck for our home! We are pleased with the outcome. The team was responsive, helped us to select a great material, was able to leverage existing framing (saved us money) and ensured the new deck was reinforced with updated support posts. They even flexed to accommodate our last minute decision to add a patio with another vendor so that the deck and patio worked together. The team was hard working and a pleasure to work with. Definitely recommend if you're looking to add a beautiful deck to your home!"

"Being a single female homeowner, I am always very careful when choosing home improvement contractors. I must say I was extremely happy that I chose Gray Painting. The work was flawless!  And it was refreshing to work with a company that made the disruption of a home improvement job as easy on the homeowner as possible. On the day of the estimate, Jason Gray gave me a detailed proposal, including copies of his workers comp and liability insurance certificates and a list of his business principles. He lived up to every one of them! His crew was experienced, very courteous, always arrived on time, took good care of my property, and cleaned up at the end of each day. The wall prep was very thorough and took care of all the cracks and imperfections on the walls. I have a high, vaulted LR/DR ceiling and lots of windows, and they paid close attention to details and cut-ins so that all the edge work was straight and clean. After the first coat of paint was applied, I was not completely happy with the shade I had selected. Jason encouraged me to switch to a slightly different shade for the second coat (I had to pay for the additional paint, but not additional labor). I was extremely pleased with the final result. Gray Painting is very easy to work with and they do outstanding work!

Customers say: Quality work

"They pressure washed, brushed two coats of stain on our cedar house, painted doors and windows, and replaced rotten wood. They were helpful, did excellent work and are very thorough. The only complaint we had was that they started seven weeks later than their original proposed start date."

"Wilbur was prompt in making initial visit and his workers were there when he said they would be. Our project required staining of a lot of trim and he meticulously taped all walls to ensure neatness. If any changes came up (there will always be some) he listened carefully to my concerns and took care of things. I will certain use his services again in the future."

"I cant say enough about the painting crew. They were always on time and worked all day. The attention to detail was great. They took much care in protecting my home by covering all the floors with paper, plastic and tape. The original bid did not include painting the inside of my lower cabinet but since they were new and required no prep work (sanding) they went ahead and painted them anyway. Great painters."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.

Staining a deck is typically less expensive upfront than painting. The cost to stain a deck professionally averages around $850, with most homeowners paying between $550 and $1,250, depending on the deck's size. A DIY staining project can cost less than $100. The cost to paint a deck ranges from $500 to $2,000. While the initial cost of staining is lower, it's important to consider long-term expenses. Paint can last up to 10 years, whereas stain needs to be reapplied every few years, which could lead to higher costs over time.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

You can use latex or acrylic paint outdoors. Although acrylic paint tends to last longer outside, it also costs more, so if you’re painting the outside of your house, for instance, latex paint is often a go-to option. However, acrylic will be your best choice if you want to spend some extra money for added durability.
