"Had Betts Structural Engineering come and look at the foundation of a house we were in contract on. Josh came out and was professional and informative. He informed us the foundation was failing and explained what needed to be done. He throughly explained everything and told us how we could do it ourselves for much cheaper than a contractor could do it. In the end he saved us from a long and expensive process if we proceeded with the house."

"My attic was lacking in insulation and my crawl space was a mess. Reed’s worked and fixed both. Workers were wonderful and polite to answer all my questions I am so thankful for the fact that they came and helped me. I really don’t know what I would have done without their help. I would recommend them to everyone that has these problems. And I have recommended them to friends and family. My electric bill greatly reduced. Thank you so much thank you thank you"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

In Athens, targeted masonry repairs like tuckpointing or patching are often more practical than full replacement, especially when addressing localized issues such as minor cracks or weathered mortar. However, if you see widespread structural problems—like bowing walls or significant brick displacement—replacement may be necessary. Athens’ climate and soil conditions make early intervention crucial to avoid more extensive and disruptive work later.

Helpful?

In Athens, homeowners often underestimate the impact of local soil movement and drainage, leading to premature cracking or leaning walls. Starting masonry projects during wet or cold weather can cause poor mortar bonding. Using modern materials on historic homes may result in mismatched repairs. Skipping required permits for retaining walls or additions can halt projects. Consulting a local masonry expert familiar with Athens’ unique conditions helps avoid these issues.

Helpful?

Homes in Athens are ideal for masonry work if you notice crumbling mortar, water stains on interior walls, or shifting bricks—especially in older or hillside properties. Athens’ clay-rich soil can cause foundation settling, making regular inspections important. If your chimney shows signs of spalling or your retaining walls lean, these are strong indicators that professional masonry services are needed to prevent further damage.

Helpful?

In Athens, masonry work is most commonly scheduled between late spring and early fall. This period offers consistently warm temperatures above 40°F, which is essential for proper mortar curing and to prevent freeze-thaw damage. Because Athens often experiences heavy spring and summer rains, contractors typically plan projects around extended dry spells to ensure optimal results and minimize weather-related delays.

Helpful?

When undertaking masonry work in Athens, always wear protective gear such as gloves, safety glasses, and dust masks. Schedule work during mild, dry weather to reduce risks from slippery surfaces or heat stress. On sloped lots, ensure scaffolding is stable and use fall protection. Before digging for new patios or retaining walls, confirm the location of underground utilities. Extra care is needed with older homes due to potential lead paint exposure.
