You can expect your carpet protection to last about six months to two years. It will last longer in low-traffic areas (compared to busy areas, where your carpet experiences more wear and tear). The knee kicker tool that attaches carpet to tack strips offers some stretching capabilities, so you can use this and your own arm strength to stretch out thinner carpets across a room. But you should buy or rent a stretcher for the best possible carpet application. If you don’t want to buy or rent a stretcher, it may be worth it to skip the DIY and leave this job to the pros or risk shortening the life of your new carpet by installing it without a stretcher.

The answer depends on the size of the problem. If the carpet damage is small, then you or a pro can fix it with a carpet patch. This commonly includes things like burn marks from fireplaces or small holes from furniture snagging on it.

Other times, replacing the carpet rather than repairing it is best. For example, if you have large, worn sections, water damage, or can’t get rid of a strong odor, it may be time for a replacement. Carpet removal costs average $180 plus the cost of new carpet installation.

If you don’t put padding under your carpet, the carpet won’t be protected from wear on the underside. An unpadded carpet can also be less comfortable to walk on, depending on your subfloor and the type of carpet.

You’ll know if your carpet is stretched enough if it lies completely flat and smooth across your floor. If you have ripples, wrinkled areas, or carpet piling up along the baseboards, these are telltale signs that your carpet is not fully stretched. Release the carpet from the tack strip along one wall and use a stretcher or knee kicker to stretch out the carpet before securing it again.
