"Mark Murphy was outstanding to deal with. I'm so happy we found him. I had (5) locks re-keyed and one lock changed to a digital lock. Going forward he will be my go to locksmith! He was super patient with me and very knowledgeable. Also fairly priced. HIGHLY recommend!"

"I have called over this locksmith after searching online. I have accidentally locked myself out of my apartment by forgetting the keys for a short moment while I wanted to get down to the lobby and grab my packages. I forgot for a moment that the door does not open from the outside so I locked myself outside. I have called this company to come and help me open the locked door and a very generous and helpful person came in for the rescue. He saw my issue with the door and just after opening it I requested if he could also change the whole door knob and lock for me that way I will not have to worry anymore. He was kind enough to do so and he did it very professionally without any mess. As other locksmiths like to do, they charge you a heavy price and make a very poor job, this one was very generous with the price and did the job just as I would expect from a professional locksmith. I was very pleased with this company and I highly recommend them!"

"I posted my listing yesterday and received a quote from them the same day. Eddie was helpful, quick, and professional. He helped install a security camera and repaired both our light and alarm system. We will definitely be asking for him for future projects."

"I called Alarm Protection Group AFTER my office was burglarized. Now I feel SAFE. William is great to work with. He's neat and tidy, prompt, presentable - not a butt-crack type of guy, and he doesn't leave a mess in his wake. He's also knowledgeable about the equipment and only uses high-quality products."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

The cost to hire a locksmith varies depending on the service you need. Consult your locksmith about the price of your requested services before hiring for your repair or installation. Some of the most common types of locksmith services include:

  • Installing deadbolts: $40–$75

  • Rekeying: $80–$160

  • Unlocking your house: $65–$180

  • Changing locks: $50–$200

  • Installing electronic locks: $50–$500

  • Installing smart locks: $200–$800

  • Keyless locks: $50–$300

Typically, it can take around 15 minutes to rekey a lock. The time depends on the type of lock and how skilled you are at rekeying. The first time you rekey a lock, it may take a little longer. Once you get the hang of the process, it will move along much more quickly.

Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey.

Lock bumping is a technique locksmiths use to quickly and quietly open a pin tumbler lock, typically found in most types of deadbolts. It involves inserting a specially crafted key, or bump key, into the lock and tapping or "bumping" it with a mallet or similar tool. The force applied causes the lock's pins to jump momentarily, allowing the lock to be turned and opened. Unfortunately, thieves also use this technique to break into homes. Luckily, products like a deadbolt strap will fortify your lock.

The easiest way to pick a lock is by using a titanium rake pick. This type of lock pick comes in a variety of shapes used to simulate different key configurations but generally has a tip with a bent design. Rake picks are the most beginner-friendly lockpicks and the simplest to learn how to use.
