"Tome did a great job installing our kitchen backsplash. Our kitchen looks beautiful. Tom shared some wonderful suggestions on what we should do. Not only is Tom's work fantastic, but he is the nicest, most courteous, and most flexible contractor my husband and I have used for household projects. I would use Tom again without hesitation."

"After our neighbors hired Nick to do some work in their home, I hired him to install a backsplash in our remodeled kitchen. He took out the old tile, fixed the drywall, and put up the new tile and grouted it. It made our new kitchen complete! I loved the experience so much I had Nick come back to do more tile in our foyer and closets. His prices were fair and his work was beyond amazing. He helped make a weird ending on the wall to tile look great and natural. He even recommended a grout color which I think looks perfect. The tile installation in the foyer was fast and looks better than the tile that was there. I would highly recommend Nick for any service. You may have to wait a short time, but it was worth it. I am thinking of more projects to have him come back to do. I have recommended him to all my family and friends as well."

"Robert is an exceptional craftsman. His skill shows with a perfect layout. We used big 24 by 36 inch tiles and his recommendation for the layout turned out perfect. About his service he was the first contractor to actually call out the five I contacted prior. He came out gave me a reasonable quote and took on the project the following Monday. The results are fabulous. We have already discussed him doing our bathroom next!"

Small jobs welcome

"HarnasHome Services performed all requested work with outstanding professionalism. Don and his associate were kind and respectful of my property throughout the build and the final cleanup. I asked for my room to be sheet rocked, ceiling fan installed, electric outlets installed, a partial subfloor installed then I added on a few extra things I needed done. They didn’t have to do those things but didn't hesitate getting them done. I will be hiring them again for an additional project I have in mind. I highly recommended Don Harnas for their professionalism, flexibility, timeliness, great personalities and very reasonable cost. Patricia Ulmen McCarthy"

"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Ideally, you should remove tile before installing hardwood floors, but there are good reasons not to. Removing stubborn tile can be a labor-intensive job that adds days to the project. The subfloor beneath the tiles could also be damaged during the process, meaning you’d have to repair the subfloor before installing the new hardwood floor.

On average, tiling a bathroom involves about 12 hours of labor, usually spread over two to three days to accommodate prep work and curing times. A professional tiler can often complete the installation in 6 to 8 hours, whereas a DIYer might take 10 to 16 hours. The total project time is influenced by factors like the bathroom layout, tile type, and necessary prep work, such as removing old tile. The process includes specific timelines for different areas; for example, tiling a floor takes about six hours, while a shower area can take six to ten hours. It is essential to allow for adequate curing time—typically 24 hours each—for the mortar, grout, and caulk, which is why the project extends over several days.

How long painted tiles last ultimately comes down to the quality of the paint job and how much wear and tear the tiles get. It’s possible the paint job will only last about six months if the tiles are in a high-traffic area and they weren’t properly cleaned, sanded, and primed prior to painting and sealing. Well-painted tiles in a low-traffic area should last at least a year.

Yes, but you’ll have to use some other type of tool to avoid damaging the tile and possibly injuring yourself. Some alternatives to tile cutters include a glass cutter, angle grinder, and wet saw. Depending on the tile material, you might simply be able to measure and score it with something sharp, like a carbide-tipped pencil, and break it off. Be sure to sand the edge for a smooth installation.

It’s not necessarily normal for tiles to lift, although it’s one of the common issues people may have with their tile flooring. Tiles correctly installed by pros with expansion joints should not lift over time. However, if the installation was done poorly, you might see tiles tenting or lifting as the house settles. This is more common in high-moisture areas with extreme temperatures.
