"Angel did a bathroom gut for me which included tile, plumbing, electric, painting. The job ran right on schedule. they work clean and neat. He was able to help choose perfect colors and wall paper. He was very responsive and did exactly what he said he was going to do. This is the 3rd time I hired him and I would have no hesitation hiring him again."

"They installed Cambridge paving stones around pool, patio, walkway and installed retaining wall. In addition they installed artificial turf. The price was more than fair and the installers were experts. They encountered many obstacles along the way and were fair with the cost for the required solutions. The backyard turned out great!"

"Craft Construction NY completely transformed my bathroom, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. They gutted the entire space and rebuilt it with beautiful subway tile, a new vanity, mirror, and toilet — everything looks modern, clean, and thoughtfully done. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and they went above and beyond my expectations at every step. The crew was incredibly friendly, respectful, and professional. They showed up on time each day, kept the workspace clean, and made the whole process surprisingly stress‑free. It’s rare to find a team this reliable and detail‑oriented. I highly recommend Craft Construction NY to anyone looking for quality work and a great experience. They truly delivered exceptional results."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Glazed ceramic tiles don’t need to be sealed because the glazing already offers some protection against moisture. Unglazed ceramic tiles need to be sealed to keep the porous tile safe from moisture and staining. However, both types of tile can benefit from sealing. Sealant can make the tiles easier to keep clean and offer more resistance to water, spills, and stains.

No, you don’t technically need a cement backer board for a wall tiling project, but not using it risks disastrous moisture damage. Cement is naturally water-resistant, whereas drywall soaks it in, which can lead to warping or mold growth. Always use a backer board treated with a waterproof membrane for bathrooms and other chronically damp areas to ensure complete tile shower waterproofing.

The average cost for tile installation is about $2,000, with a typical price range between $500 and $6,500. On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 for installation.

Several factors influence the total cost, including:

  • Installation Site: Costs vary for different areas. Common project costs are: kitchen floor ($870–$6,100), countertop or backsplash ($500–$3,000), bathroom floor ($300–$2,400), or shower wall ($225–$2,000).

  • Tile Type and Quality: The material significantly impacts price. For example, standard ceramic or travertine tile can cost about $1 per square foot, while luxury options like marble can be as much as $350 per square foot for the material alone.

  • Project Size and Complexity: The total square footage, the complexity of the pattern, and the shape of the tile (e.g., square, rectangle, hexagon, mosaic) will affect labor and material costs.

  • Site Preparation: The amount of prep work needed, such as removing old tile or installing a new subfloor or backer board, can add to the final price.

  • Tile Characteristics: The tile's durability rating and porosity can also influence the price.

  • Location: Labor rates vary by geographic location.

Different types of tile cutters may work best depending on the type of tile you are cutting and the size of your project. There are two main types of tile cutters: manual and electric. Manual tile cutters are quick and easy to use for small projects and softer tile materials, but they can only make straight cuts. Electric tile cutters make light work of big projects and can cut through harder materials.

There are no unbreakable rules of design, but experts recommend against using large tiles in areas with poor subflooring where they’re more prone to cracking, in areas where the floor isn’t entirely level, over raised areas or dips, and in bathrooms where budget is the primary concern. The size of your bathroom shouldn’t be a reason not to use large tiles; in fact, larger tiles, also known as slab tiles, can be a modern and sleek choice for bathroom floors and walls.
